Too Many Hugs : A Book About Consent

In this gentle book on consent, Theo teaches his family about the need for respect and personal boundaries.  After a day of too many hugs, he writes his five rules for hugging and puts them on the refrigerator.  When Grandma comes in for a smooching hug, she sees the rules and steps.  “ How about a hug?” she asks.  Theo can’t wait to say “YES!”   Why does consent matter?  Research shows that helping kids learn to take charge of their bodies and decide for themselves what is welcome ( or unwelcome) touch is a critical step to empowering them against abuse.  Asking – not demanding – a hug from a child teaches him that he matters as a person and that he is as deserving of respect as a grownup.  >>> On the last pages, find “ A Note for Children” and “ A Note for Caregivers “.

同意に関するこの絵本の中では、Theoが彼の家族に”個人の心地良さ”を配慮するように告げた。ハグをいっぱいされた翌日、彼はハグについての５つのルールを書いて冷蔵庫のドアに張った。祖母がいつものしつっこいハグをしようと来た時に、祖母は冷蔵庫に張ってあるルールと順番を読んでから、「ハグをしてもいいかしら？」と尋ねた。もちろんTheoは彼女のハグを同意した。さて、何故同意が大事なのか？ある研究によると、人に体を触られた時に心地良いのか悪いのかを判断し自分の体を自分で認識する力は、虐待から身を守る重要な第一歩となる。子どもにハグを要求するのではなく尋ねる行為は、大人と同様に自分も一人の人として大事に扱われていると子どもが認識できる。＞＞＞巻末に「子どもへの解説」と「保護者達への解説」がある。

My Hair Is A Book

Black people’s hair has been telling stories for generations, from ponytails of ancient tribes to cornrows that mapped paths to freedom for enslaved Africans.  There have been stories about dance with styles that twist and swoop, and the sweetest tales of cinnaburns and Afro puffs made perfect in the hottest kitchens.  In each of these stories, one notion rings true: Black hair is everything – a thesaurus, an atlas, and more -rich with history, telling of truth, trials and undeniable beauty. >>>On the last pages, find the Author’s Note.

黒人の髪の毛は、何世代にも渡って多くの物語を告げて来た。太古の部族のポニーテイルから、アフリカ人が奴隷狩りから逃れる道しるべを示すコーンロウ（髪を頭皮に沿って細かく編み込む アフリカ発祥の伝統スタイル）まで。旋回したり急降下する髪型は踊りにはうってつけだし、アフロの髪型のようにふっくら膨らんだパンやシナモンロールのような賑やかな台所に漂う甘い物語もある。そして、どの物語にも真実がある。つまり、黒人の髪の毛は、類語辞典であり、地図であり、他にも多くの役割を果たしているし、歴史を語り、本音を告げ、試練であり明白なる美しさでもある総てなのだ。＞＞＞巻末に作者からの言葉がある。

Grandpa’s Scroll

Lily lives in Washington, DC. Her grandpa lives in Korea.  A rice-paper scroll that Grandpa plans to finish painting with Lily shows her how their love overcomes differences and distances, even death.
