Manny comes from a long line of gardeners, and his dad is the greatest of them all.  Dad always knows what plants need.  Even with no yard to garden in, he turns their apartment into a jungle.  Now the time has come for Manny to get a plant of his own! But watching Dad work isn’t the same as knowing everything he knows.  It will  take a lot of effort, a trip to the library, and the spirit of a true gardener to stop Manny’s new amigo from wilting and help it grow bigger than he ever could have imagined.

Mannyの家系は庭師として長かったが、自分の父親が一番素晴らしい庭師である。父親は植物が何を必要としているのか、いつでも理解できた。たとえ庭がなくとも、彼はアパートを緑の植物でいっぱいにした。いよいよMannyにも、自分の植物を自分で育てる時が来た。しかし、父親の仕事を学ぶことは、自分が今まで知っていたこと以上に大変であった。それは多くの努力が必要であり、図書館に通って勉強し、本物の庭師魂を育んで、Mannyの新しい友人である植物を枯らさないように手をかけて想像以上に大きく立派に成長させるのだ。

Isabelle would love to make friends, but she’s too afraid to talk to her classmates.  She doesn’t dare to ask them whether she can sit with them on the bus, join their group in class, or walk home with them after school.  Then Isabelle receives an unexpected gift from her aunt: a special button.  It reminds her to be proud of herself and have confidence.  Thanks to her button, Isabelle finally finds the courage to make friends.

Junia : The Book Mule of Troublesome Creek

Junia is a mule.  She’s a mule with an important job.  Every morning she carries her Book Woman up and down the rugged hills and surrounding woodlands near the Kentucky town of Troublesome Creek.  Book Woman is a Pack Horse librarian.  She and Junia deliver free books and reading material to the people living in the hills and woods.  It’s not easy work.  Every month they ride hundreds of miles to make their deliveries.  They’ve traveled through sunshine, rain, and snow, up twisting, turning paths where no car or wagon could ever go.  But Junia can – steady, sure-footed bighearted Junia. >>> On the last pages, more details about Kentucky Pack Horse Librarians are found.

We Came To America

The Star Festival

On the day of Tanabata Maturi, the Star Festival, Keiko, her mama and her grandmother make tanzaku wishes.  Obaasan (grandmother in Japanese) tells Keiko the Tanabata Legend: The Emperor of the Heavens separates his daughter, Orihimme, from her love, Hikoboshi, all year.  On this day (July 7), the two stars finally reunite, crossing a bridge over the Milky Way.  At the celebration, Keiko and her family take in the colorful decorations and eat delicious food like nagashi somen.  But when Obaasan gets lost in the crowd, Keiko and Mama must make their own bridge to find her again- and see if their tanzaku wishes come true. >>>On the last pages, more information about Tanabata is found.

The Turtle Ship

Long ago in Korea, a young boy named Sun-sin dreamed of traveling around the world with his pet turtle, Goburi.  But Sun-sin was poor, so his dream seemed impossible.  Then the king announced a contest to design a new battleship to defend the land.  The winner would sail the ocean with the royal navy!
