Nowhere in Africa

Based on a true story of a Jewish family.  Jewish couple wife and husband, and their five years old daughter flee from the Nazi regime in their home country Germany, and they head to Africa in 1938.  As challenging to settle in Kenya, they receive uncontrolled news of the raged war from the other side of the world. Their relation as a family becomes unstable emotionally, but eventually they learn to cherish their days in Africa as their daughter embraces her new environments.

第二次世界大戦当時、ナチによるユダヤ人迫害が強化されるドイツから逃れてケニアに住んだユダヤ人夫婦の物語。幼い娘連 れで、夫の待つケニアに船で渡った妻は、戸惑いながらもアフリカ生活に馴染んでたくましく生きるようになる。アフリカの空気を吸い、アフリカの食べ物を食 べ、現地の村人達に溶け込んで育った娘も、アフリカでの大自然との生活にすっかり染まる。祖国から届く家族の手紙によって知らせれる人間の狂気と実に対照 的な、アフリカの素朴で暖かな人達が印象深い。

Raj is a son of  Indian successful wealthy businessman in London.  Simran is a daughter of Indian middle class worker’s family in London. By coincidence Raj and Simran meet during their traveling through Europe with each own friends, and they attract each other. However Simran is forced to leave London and return to India with her family as her arranged marriage is preparing. Squashing between her parents and relatives’ Indian tradition and her unclear mind, Simran is not excited at all to meet her future husband they chosen. When Simran finds Raj comes to India to take back her, she understands clearly her true mind filling with love toward Raj.

ボリウッド映画界の大男優となったShahrukh Khanが、コミカルでまじめな将来の実業家を熱演している。ロンドンに住む実業家のインド人親子の息子とインド人労働者家庭の娘が、欧州大陸旅行中に出 会った。娘には、祖国インドに住む父親の知人の息子との結婚が整いつつあった。伝統文化と自分との関わりという大きなテーマを持ったこの映画は、祖国を離 れて異国の地で生活を築いているインド人たちからも、高評価を得た作品である。

In 1947, amidst the chaos and bloodshed unleashed when India and Pakistan are split into separate states, Gian, Sikh and a former soldier, risks everything to save a young Muslim woman, Naseem, from a violent mob. Eventually Gian and Naseem fall in love each other and establish their own family beyond their different faith. But their peaceful days are destroyed when Naseem goes to see her family in Pakistan.

1947年のインド・パキスタン分離独立の時代背景で、当時インドに住むイスラム教徒がパキスタンに、パキスタンに住む 非イスラム教徒がインドへと大移動があり、その間に衝突で100万人が殺害されたとも言われている。そういう異宗教への憎しみがある中、シク教徒の元 兵士が助けたイスラム教徒の女性との関係が深まり、やがて2人は結婚して子どもも授かる。異なる信仰にもめげず愛を貫いた2人ではあるが、妻がパキスタン にいる自分の家族に会いに行ったことから悲劇が始まる。ひたむきな愛の強さが感動的であり、実に見ごたえのある映画である。

Passport to Love

Two young Vietnam men are accepted officially their enroll in a college located in Los Angeles. One is a dissipated son of successful businessman, and the other is a faithful son who asks his fiancé to take care his beloved mother during his absence from home country. The two leave Vietnam and start  American college student life together. Each of them meet a Vietnam American lady. Between their original culture and Americanized Vietnam culture, they struggle to find their own way each other.

ベトナムの若者2人がロスアンジェルスの大学に留学が決まった。一人は実業家の放蕩息子で、もう一人はまじめな母親思い で、彼のフィアンセが一人サイゴンに残る母親の面倒をみてくれる。そしてこの2人が、米国に住むベトナム系の女性と、夫々出会う。アメリカナイズされたベ トナムのカルチャーと、オリジナルのベトナムのカルチャーの狭間で、揺れる若者たちの心は、どの民族でも同じようだ。サイゴンの若者文化やベトナム人俳優 達に、東南アジア各国の類似性が良く現れている。そこには美意識や価値観に、共通性が流れている。

After beloved son passed away, the days of his father never returns to joyful rose colored.  His grayish gloomy dismal life takes all his positive energy from his soul, until he get a mysterious lamp. It’s a kind of fairy-tale, but suddenly he is awaken that diverse people in his neighborhood helps him to set his mind positive direction with bright colorful happiness.

息子を亡くして嘆き悲しむ父親の暗い心理が全般を占めているこの映画は、一見暗いイメージではあるが、ランプの出現に よって人生の流れがポジティブに進展してゆく。ランプと言う子どもの童話めいた演出ではあるが、ランプを人生のあるきっかけと解釈すれば、大人にも充分見 ごたえがあるストーリー。何よりも現代米国のコミュニティーの一例として、異人種、身体障害児童、自閉症児童、ペット犬等が共同体を作っている現実をほの ぼのと教えてくれ、誰もが居場所を見つけてお互いに必要としている心温まるメッセージを教えてくれる。

Sarafina!

In 1970s South Africa, amid the Apartheid policy, a darling history teacher is arrested and police officers take her away from the school. This unacceptable event leads her students’ protest action, and Sarafina, girl student living in Soweto-segregated black people’s community in Johannesburg, initiates the protesting movement. It’s expanded quickly among young blacks with uncontrolled hatred against white power. As the result of ravaged chaos, Sarafina loose many her schoolmates’ lives. She needs to find the right direction more calmly and peacefully.

南アフリカがまだアパルトヘイト政策をひいていた時代、生徒達から慕われていた歴史の教師（Whoopi Goldberg）が警察に連行された。それをきっかけに、生徒達の反抗が始まった。黒人隔離地区Sowetoに住む女子学生Sarafinaは、リー ダー格となって白人への敵意 をむき出しにしたが、かえって流血騒動に発展してしまい多くの学友を失った。気持ちの高揚を、Sowetoの若者達が迫力ある歌と踊りで現している。ネル ソン・マンデラが大統領となった新生南アフリカ共和国は、人種分離ではなく共存の多民族社会へと生まれ変わったが、長く苦しい道のりであった。

Liam, 28 years old Chinese-American actor struggling in Hollywood, dislike his alcoholic father. Liam flirts with the teenage Adelaide who is a high school student with free-spirited genius. One day, Liam’s father tells his grandmother in Shanghai died and left her property for Liam. He takes a first trip to China, and is excited starting his new life in Shanghai.  However, once Liam settles in new life environments, he starts missing all his days in America.

アメリカ育ちの中国人男性の主人公は、アルコール依存症の父を嫌っているが、その父から上海の祖母が亡くなったことを知 らされる。一度も会ったこともない祖母が、孫に家を残した。その家を見に上海に渡って、初めて自分の中国人としてのアイデンティティーに気ずき、若く明る い性格の米国人ガールフレンドと別れて上海に移ってしまう。しかし、今度は、米国へのホームシックが頭を持ち上げる。知らなかった世界を知ることによっ て、大人になってゆくユニークな異文化間の恋愛物語。

Two teenage girls, who have the same birthday,  live in the two different worlds separated faraway. Katie is born in California and raised by wealthy family, and her primary concern is her relationship with her boyfriend. Meanwhile, Ling is born in China with a facial deformity and abandoned by her birth parents. Ling and her foster father live in low economical lifestyle with limited possibility to have a better life. When Katie volunteers for a medical program abroad, she comes face to face with Ling in China and sees her difficulties. Katie works hard to invite Ling to America and the both learn life-affirming lessons each other.

カリフォルニアのテーンエイジャーの少女の話と、中国で赤ん坊の時に捨てられた顔を隠して育った少女の話が、同時進行し てゆく。2人の接点は、三口の赤ん坊を救う運動のパンフレットであった。カリフォルニアの少女は医療ボランティアに参加して中国に行き、父親と2人暮らし の顔を隠した自分と同じ生年月日の少女に会う。不幸だった中国人少女がアメリカに渡りハッピーエンドになる物語は、一見アメリカのプロパガンダ的映画のよ うでもあるが、実際はアメリカの崩壊寸前の家庭への教訓を込めている。中国人父親の代償を求めない愛情や、中国の少女を救う過程で真実の愛に目覚めていっ たのはむしろアメリカ人達であった。

As being excited to show the world their hot new music and hip new dance moves, they fly to India immediately. But they find out three girls need to compete each other for the starring role. Their perfectly beautiful teamwork is faced serious crisis.

デズニー製作らしく家族そろって充分に楽しめれる歌と踊りと、ニューヨークの混合人種カルチャーとインドの伝統カル チャーが、カラフルに展開する映画。3人の女性ボーカルグループは、いつの日か成功することを夢見てニューヨークで売り込みに励んでいたら、ボリウッド映 画出演の話が舞い込み、インドへ行くことになる。インドの映画撮影現場で、3人は不用である為、１人だけを選ばなければならなくなった。ハリウッド映画と ボリウッド映画の融合を試みているような映画であり、事実その成功例とも言えそうである。

B.A.P.S.

Two girlfriends, who works at the same soul foods restaurant as waitresses, fly to Los Angels to take a chance to make money for opening their dream restaurant. They challenge an audition for a music video, but one of girls is asked to act just for a week as a granddaughter of a wealthy white old man who residences in Beverly Hills. First they think of Money, but awake something else more valuable while inspiring black culture to white workers in the residence.

タイトルのB.A.P.S.は、BLACK　AMERICAN　PREINCESSESの省略で、ソウルフーズレストラ ンで働いていた２人の女友達が、ビデオダンサーのオーデションを受ける為にロスアンジェルスへ。そしてひょんなことから、ビバリーヒルズにある白人老人の 大邸宅に住み込む。始めはお金ほしさから、その老人の孫娘に成りすましていたが、だんだんとお金以上に大切なものに気ずいてゆく。その一方で、大邸宅では 黒人カルチャーがじわじわと繰り広げられてドタバタしながらも、ほろりとさせられる黒人女性のシンデレラ物語。Hale Berryが、喜劇を熱演している。
