The boy, child of the Lord of the Sun, is mocked by the other boys because he seems to have no father.  Then one day the boy comes to a decision: “Mother,” he says, “I must look for my father.  No matter where he is, I must find him.”  And thus begins his quest… With vibrant colors and bold geometric forms, Gerald McDermott brilliantly captures the stylized look of Pueblo Indian art in this retelling of an ancient legend.  A young boy searches for his father, but before he can claim his heritage he must first prove his worthiness by passing through the four ceremonial chambers: the kiva of lions, the kiva of snakes, the kiva of bees, and the kiva of lightning.  Striking in its simplicity and grace, arrow to the Sun vividly evokes the Native American reverence for the source of all life – the Solar Fire.

太陽王の子であるその少年は、他の少年達から父なし子として嘲笑された。そしてある日、その少年は大決心をした。「母さん」と言うと「父親を捜しに行く。父親がどこにいようとも、捜さなくてはならない。」こうしてその少年の冒険の旅が始まった、、、 鮮やかな色彩と大胆な幾何学模様で、Gerald McDermottは古代から伝わる話に、プエブロ部族の芸術を儀式の描写に見事に取り込んだ。父親を捜しに出かけた少年は、自分の祖先を確認する前に、４つの儀式の部屋を通過して自分の適任性を証明する必要があった。それらはライオンのいるKiva（プエブロ族が儀式や集会に使っていた円形の半地下施設）、蛇のいるKiva、蜂のいるKiva、そして電光のKiva。簡素で明瞭な物語を印象深く描き、太陽に向かって放たれた矢が生命の源－太陽の熱ーへのアメリカ先住民の畏敬の念を鮮やかに呼び起こしている。
