Eight toddlers at the baby school start to do aerobics in their style as pretending different animals and mimicking their movements.  Enjoy different animals exercise, and admire the toddler’s imagination. The author Zita has career not only of creating children’s picture books, but also of managing children’s music class.

ベビースクールにやって来た多彩なる８人の幼児達が、動物のマネをしながら繰り広げるエアロビックス体操。動作の可愛さとイマジネーションの楽しさに、一緒に体を動かしたくなる。比較文化のカテゴリーではあるが、ここでは動物の動きの比較である。ここに登場する様々な人種の幼児達には、異文化の違いを比較する必要がないほど、一つの世界を共有している。幼児期のこの種の楽しい時間を、どの子にも大いに体験して欲しい。制作者のZitaは、児童絵本作家・イラストレーターとしてのキャリア以外に、幼児向け音楽クラブも運営している。

In 1805, a Shoshoni (one of native American tribes) couple accompanied Lewis & Clark uncounted on their Western expedition. Their Shoshoni baby on Sacagawea’s back observed all adventure and natural wonders from Mississippi until the Pacific Ocean coast. By the summer of 1806 when the parents returned to home, this baby boy started to walk. At the end of the book, more detail of this historical adventure trip.

1805年の４月からLewis ＆ Clark の２人のパイオニアの道案内役を努めたShoshoni 族の両親と共に旅した幼児の目に記憶された、当時の大陸の光景をドラマチックに描いている。大自然の中の旅はミシシッピー近郊から太平洋まで及び、母の背中に背負われていた幼い男の子は、1806年の夏に故郷に戻る頃には歩けるようになっていた。過酷で美しい大自然の中で出会った様々な動物たちが登場し、多彩なる擬音が大自然の豊かさを伝えてくれる。巻末にはこの歴史的な旅の解説がある。

Once a Shepherd

This is the tale of Tom Shepherd, tending his lambs and sharing their fleece and wooing his sweetheart, who waves the sheep’s wool to make Tom a coat. But WWI comes, and Tom must leave his beloved wife and his unborn child and go off to fight. Latter, his wife receives the sad news of Tom’s death. Quietly, tenderly but strongly appeals to against the war.

反戦をテーマとした絵本である。オーストラリアのヴィクトリアに住むGlenda Millard とシドニーに住むPhil Lesnie コンビで、羊飼いを主人公にして静かに力強く反戦を訴えている。水彩画のイラストは、醜い戦場の場面さえも柔らかいトーンで醜さを包んでいる。Onceがページ毎に繰り返される文章は、詩のように韻を踏んでいる。平和的なイメージで始まり、平和的なイメージで終わるが、読後に戦争への怒りがずっしりとこみ上げてくる。

New Shoes

Ella Mae is excited to get her new shoes, and goes to the Mr. Johnson’s shoe store with her mother. But Ella Mae has to wait when a white girl arrives after her and she is served first. Then Ella Mae finds that she is unable even to try on the shoes because of her skin color. Determined to fight back, Ella Mae and her friend work to collect and restore old shoes and transforms them new ones. They give their black community members a place to buy their own shoes comfortably and happily.

黒人の少女が新しい靴を買ってもらうために母親と靴屋へ行った。後から店内に来た白人の少女に、白人の店主は靴を試着させた。その子が靴を買って父親と出て行くが、黒人の少女には試着が許されず、靴の大きさを紙に書いて店主に渡すのである。疑問に思い不満を感じた少女は、従妹と一緒にある考えを思いつき実行に移した。古い靴を集めて磨き、自分達の靴屋を開いた。無論誰でもが靴を試着できる店である。６０年代半ばまで存続した、米国の人種分離政策への少女達の抵抗物語でもある。巻末では当時の時代背景が説明されている。

コミュニケーションに関する絵本である。英語の言葉”Thank you”等を何時どのように使うのかを、丁寧に絵本で説明している。言葉を発することの大切さを、英語を学ぶ子に教えてくれる。この絵本はタイトルの通りPolite やKindがテーマであるが、The Free Spirit “Learning to Get Along”のシリーズでは、この本の他に５つの別のテーマも取り上げている。巻末にはこの絵本の活用方法が、詳しく解説されている。

副題にA Year of Jewish Holidaysとあり、ユダヤ人の祝日を子どもの誕生を通してからの一年の歳月の中で紹介している。貼り絵のようなタッチのイラストは親しみ易く温かみが伝わってくる。家族のつながりと愛情が、それぞれの伝統的な祝いの中で生き生きとしている。文中の英文は短く詩のようではあるが、巻末で詳しくヘブライ語の言葉や意味を解説し、それぞれの祝日に関係する伝統的な食べ物の作り方やクラフトの作り方もある。ユダヤ人の子ども達の伝統継承のみならず、ユダヤ文化理解にも大いに役立つ絵本である。

Watermelon Wishes

As they enjoy several activities together, Grandpa tries to guess what Charlie would ask for.     In the end Charlie reveals his wish…..sweet story just like as the taste of watermelon.

祖父と一緒にスイカの種を植えたチャーリー少年は、”願い事をかなえるスイカ”の成長を楽しみにした。祖父はチャーリーが何を願っているのか、スイカの成長を二人で確認する度に、いろいろと思いをめぐらす。自然の中での祖父とチャーリー少年の会話がとっても暖かく、微笑ましく伝わってくる。明るい色彩のイラストも、読者をワクワクさせる。スイカが実って二人で食べた後、チャーリーは願い事をした。喉を潤してくれる甘いスイカのように、とってもスイートな話の絵本。

Inspired by the experience of the author’s parents. Shortly after his family, along with thousands of Japanese Americans, are sent to an internment camp after the attack on Pearl Harbor. As having isolated life with fighting the heat  and dust of the desert, his father builds a baseball diamond and forms a league in order to boost the spirits of the internees. He and other boys learn to play the baseball game not only to win, but also  to gain dignity and self-respect.

米国シアトル生まれ育ちの日系米国人Ken Mochizukiが、韓国ソウル生まれ育ちで米国に住むDon Leeと制作した絵本であり、両者にとって共に処女作である。第二次世界大戦中、米国政府によって強制隔離キャンプに送られた両親をもつKen Mochizukiは、実話から影響を受けてこの絵本を制作した。キャンプ生活で兄が荒れた心になってゆく過程と、主人公の少年が野球をすることによってたくましく成長してゆく様子が、見事に描かれている。過酷な戦争体験の背景はあるが、それ以上に、少年の成長記録である。

米国先住民の中の”小川の種族”と”大きな湖の種族”の混血であるジェーナは、祖母の踊ったジングル・ダンスにすっかり魅了された。ジングルとは、伝統的な衣装に縫い付けられた小さな円錐型の鈴で、踊るステップでリンリンと音を出す。それがジェーナには、太鼓の音やダンスの動作と共に調和した歌声に聞こえるところが、微笑ましい。周囲の女性達から譲ってもらったジングルのお陰で、ジェーナも先住民たちの盛大な集会パウパウで、ジングルダンスを踊ることが出来た。米国先住民の代々伝わる伝統が、巻末で詳しく書かれている。水彩画のイラストも大変に良くマッチしている。

Block Party Today!

On the first Saturday of June, everyone on Barkley Plaza is exciting with having a Block Party. Except a girl who breaks her friendship with other 2 girls, and she decides to spend all day in her bed. As hearing louder and joyful noise from out side, it’s getting harder for the silly girl to stay by herself in the bed. It’s a big marvelous annual event of the diversity community.

多種多様な人々が住むコミュ二ティーでのブロックパーティーの日は、６月の第一土曜日であった。いよいよバークレープラザにその日がやって来て、みんなが浮き浮きと準備を始めた。しかし、３人仲良し娘の１人ローラは、１人すねていてベットから一日中出ないつもりであった。外では食べ物が並び、音楽やダンスが始まり、子ども達の笑い声も大きくなった。コミュニティーの暖かさと３人の友情が重なってゆく、ほのぼのとした話の絵本。
