Based on a historical event in Egypt. In the 4th century of Alexandria, there is AGORA in the marvelous Alexandria library, proud of the world largest collection in the ancient Egypt. AGORA in Greek means a gathering place to discuss with others, to gain new knowledge and to expand own thoughts. One of activists in Alexandria AGORA is Hypatia, beautiful young lady astronomer with bright rich knowledge. But, as new religious group gets a power, her sensational epoch is ruined down as same as Alexandria library.

4世紀のエジプト・アレキサンドリア図書館が舞台。当時の図書館は、単に記録の保管場所だけでなく、知識を深め、哲学を論ずる神聖なる集会所（AGORAとはギリシャ語の集会所）でもあった。そこで活躍していた女性天文学者Hypatiaは、実在人物で美しく聡明な学者であったが、彼女は悲劇の主人公でもある。当時新興宗教であったキリスト教やユダヤ教に人々が染まってゆく中で、真理を追求する彼女を慕う学び仲間達は、だんだんと時代の波に飲まれて彼女から離れてゆく。1700年後の今日でも通じるメッセージを、映画の中ではHipatiaが言っているが、彼女が天動説を解明したことを、事実として信じたくなる。映像も映画音楽も、Hypatiaの存在感を深く印象つける。

Inspired by a true event in 1970s North Carolina. A black Vietnam War Veteran is murdered by white men in a small town in North Carolina. He has a wife and children, and just returns bravely from Vietnam War without hurt himself. A black local teacher and newly arrived white preacher work hardly to avoid violent chaos to see justice done and change the brutal legacy of the past.

1970年にノースカロライナの小さな町で、ベトナム戦争帰還兵の黒人男性が殺された。妻子のいた彼は、戦場から無事帰還した間もなく、自分の故郷で命を奪われた。この事件を基に、異人種間のヘイト・クレイムを無くすために、立ち上がった人々の記録物語でもある。民衆の意識深くに入り込んでしまった偏見を取り除くのは、一人の人間が即座に出来ることではない。４０年前にこの裁判判決に失望を抱いた人達は、夫々の立場から、この困難な挑戦に挑んできた。巻末で紹介している彼らの存在感から、この映画のメッセージが鮮明に伝わってくる。

Based on a biography of Princess Kaiulani in the late of 1880s Hawaii.  Polynesian and Scottish mixed blooded 13 years old Princess Kaiulani is next in line for the Hawaiian throne. However, the Royal family and Hawaiian people struggle to keep their independence and right of self-governance away from the economical and political power of newly arrived people in the islands. Princess Kaiulani is exiled to father’s country, and almost settles in there for her new loving life. As receiving the heartbroken news of her uncle King kalakaua died, she decides to return to Hawaii for her beloved islands and people.

ハワイの近代史を語るとき、23歳で死去した忘れられないプリンセスの物語。ハワイ王朝の血筋をもつポリネシア人の母とスコットラド上流階級の父の間に生を受けたプリンセス･カイウラニは、生まれながらにロイヤルファミリーの一員として育つが、幼くして母を亡くす。ハワイ王朝を覆そうとする米国商人達の野望が渦巻く時代、娘の身の危険を悟った父は、娘をスコットランドへ連れて行き教育を受けさせた。２つの異なる血統のカルチャーをもつプリンセス・カイウラニは、やがて自分の運命に立ち向かう。美しいハワイやスコットランドの風景の映像の中に、もろくも強く人の心を支えるカルチャーが、浸み込んでいるようだ。

In a small village on Luzon Island, Philippine, some American soldiers come to occupy and even their language barrier, the soldiers need to communicate with the village people to learn how to live and manage their lives in the mysterious deep green nature.

スペインからアメリカに植民政策が移る２０世紀初めのフィリピン･ルソン島にある村に、米軍兵士達がやって来た。村の生き生きとした緑深い大自然の中で、言葉の通じぬ者同士の生活が始まる。方や銃を持った兵士達、方や伝統的な生き方をする村人達。過酷な条件下の中でも、笑顔を忘れない村人達に、米兵達の心にも和やかさが蘇ってくるのだが、、、、緊迫時の異文化理解は、正に手探りの綱渡りである。２時間を越す長編ではあるが、世界各地に住むフィリピン若者達だけの歴史物語には終わらせたくない、観ごたえのある作品。

Based on the novel by Gary Paulsen.  Twelve years old Sarny, a slave in the antebellum South, has the fortune to read and write. Despite literacy is not allowed for black slavers and it’s a crime punishable by death, a former runaway slaver, Nightjohn secretly teaches Sarny to read and write. Nightjohn and Sarny work together to free other slaves by forging passes to the North. But their planned escape is discovered.

米国の南北戦争以前の南部で使われていた黒人奴隷達は、読み書きを習うことが禁じられていた。しかしJohnという名の新しくやって来た黒人奴隷男性が、ある聡明な黒人奴隷少女に読み書きを内緒で教えた。識字の意義と喜びを学んだ少女は、白人プランテーション主達の世界に段々と足を踏み込んでゆく。危険と勇気の絡み合いの中で、文字は自由を手に入れる手段でもあった。米国黒人奴隷史の一コマを、勇敢なる少女によって描いた感動作品。少女役のAllison Jonesが好演をしている。

The well established white man is a father whose son is killed, and the black gentle preacher is a father whose son is convicted death sentence of the murder. Overwhelming sadness of lost own son suddenly starts emotional fighting in the minds of two fathers. Under the apartheid policy the fathers patiently understand the necessity of avoiding a violent collision.  And they find together the kind of mutual understanding that could heal a nation.  Based on the novel.

1946年の南アフリカ･ヨハネスバーグで起こった殺人事件に巻き込まれた２人の父親。白人の父親は息子が殺され、黒人の父親は息子が殺人犯として死刑判決を受ける。この２人の父親が、父親としての息子の死の悲しみを背負いながらも、人種の憎しみを超えようと心を深めてゆく。小説の映画化作品であるが、アパルトヘイト政策の陰でも、絶えることのなかった人種を超えた祖国愛が、感動的に描かれている。
