ジャマイカからニューヨークにやって来た少女の望郷の思いが、きり絵のようなイラストと解りやすい英文で表されている。始めの言葉に、「ウエスト・インド・デーのパレードで踊ったニューヨークの子ども達へ」と書かれている。きっと同じような望郷の思いをくぐり抜けて、ニューヨークッ子に育ってゆくのだろう。そういう様々なカルチャーを飲み込み又再生する躍動が、ニューヨークにはあるようだ。低学年児童でも充分に楽しめれる、楽しい色彩の絵本。

絵本作家もイラストレーターもニューヨークに住み、児童絵本を何冊も手がけたベテランである。３人の子どもと両親の５人家族の黒人一家が登場。その家族の中で、姉と弟に挟まれた次女のデイジーは、いつも皆から無視されているような寂しさと不満があったが、、、隣に友達が来てから、デイジーの周辺が変わりだす。デイジーの友人は異なる人種だが、それは大きな問題ではない。こういうさりげない異人種の扱い方が、ニューヨークの魅力とも言えそうだ。

Incredible relation between a Koran man and a Japanese man who both are good marathon runners, and the two are in rivalry in 1940s South Korea. But the war breaks out and the destinies of the both lead rough lives until the Normandy battle in 1944.
２０世紀の世界を吹き荒れた戦争が背景とはなっているが、見ごたえのある長編ヒューマン物語。韓国人のKang監督は、ノルマンディー上陸作戦時に撮られたドイツ軍の軍服を着たアジア男性の写真を、近年米国で公開された公文資料の中に見つけ、１９４０年の戦争で実行できなかった幻の東京オリンピックの実話と結びつけた。リアルな戦闘シーンは、狂気の渦に巻き込まれる人々の対極にある人間の崇高さに輝きをもたせる為、監督自らの演出である。憎しみを超えて輝く人の心の崇高さが、深い感動をもたらしてくれる。Kang監督を信頼しているアジア人俳優達の演技も素晴らしい。

His business is shot down as the nightclubs is prohibited for people, so he and his wife ask their son, who is the last one at their family dinner table, to escape from their home country Cuba.
1950年代のキューバで、成功をおさめていたナイトクラブの経営者が、社会主義改革の波に飲み込まれてゆく。家族揃って日曜日の夕食を共にしていたテーブルから、兄弟達の席が空白になってゆく。ナイトクラブの経営が禁じられ、最後に残った息子に、両親がキューバを出るように哀願する。家族の結束とその人にとっての国の存在は、誰にでも重なるのであろう。ニューヨークに渡って自分のキューバを再現させた主人公に、監督兼俳優のAndy Garciaの情熱がほとばしり出ている作品。

明るく楽しく展開する、異民族間のラブロマンス物語。父親の仕事を手伝う為に中国に行った米国人青年が、上海近郊の村の工場へ視察に行った時、美しい娘に出会った。そしてその娘だけが、村で唯一英語が通じる人であった。オーソドックスなストーリーラインではあるが、現代の両国の若者を描いている点では、Foreign Studentと比較するのも興味深い。比較することによって、時代が反映しているカルチャーと地域のカルチャーの違いが鮮明になる。そして異文化を乗り越えて変わらない愛の力とは、、、、、人間の歴史の原点がそこにあるのかもしれない。

1955年に、スカラシップをもらって米国バージニアに留学したパリの青年の物語。フットボールとアメリカンフットボールの違いからカルチャーショックを受けたり、同じ白人でもフランス人の青年には米国黒人の音楽に好奇心はあっても偏見が全くなかったり。異民族カップルが許されなかった時代にも関わらす、一目惚れした黒人女性に率直に思いを表現しようとするフランス青年はいじらしくもある。異文化理解の教材としても、ストーリーラインに議論の要点となりそうな描写が随所にあるので、大いに活用できる作品。

現代の米国公共教育の問題点に光を当てたこの映画は、教育の意義を問うだけでなく、思春期の様々な人種の若者達が生徒であり、さらには実話に基ずいた作品であることに圧倒される。Hilary Swank演じる若い新任英語教師は、教育への意欲満々で新しい教壇に立つが、目の前にいる生徒達ほとんどが、暴力と絶望の生活を強いられている環境にいる事実を知る。そして、そこから真の教育を模索し始める。書くことによって声に出来ない思いを出させ、読むことによって他の人の苦しみを学ばせた。この映画のタイトルの基金ができるほど大反響を得た作品であり、異文化理解の視点からも深く心に浸み込んでくる映画である。
