Polish female runs away from the town in Netherland, where she was forced to work as a prostitute and raped. In a countryside of Netherland, she loses her way to go and her consciousness as well. A farm owner living by himself finds her and takes care her. As speaking different language, they starts to live together.

ポーランド女性がオランダで売春婦をさせられ、レイプされて逃げ出した。町から逃れてある農場で力尽きると、そこの農場主の一人暮らしの男性が救ってくれた。それから言葉の通じない2人の間に、少しずつ心が通ってゆく過程が、丁寧に描かれている。ストリーの内容は決して明るくもロマンチックでもないが、心を通わせるたどたどしいやり取りが、異文化間のロマンスをより情熱的に演出している。

Before World War 2, Avik who is a mix blood boy between white and Inuit leaves his Arctic home with a British mapmaker to Canada as his first experience expanding life outside of his world. In Montreal Avik meets Albertine who is a mix blood girl between white and Native person, and their lives link each other even through the War and distance.

白人系のイヌイットの少年と白人系北米原住民の混血少女との淡いそして、強い何かがひきつけあう2人。第二次世界大戦の勃発で、2人の運命は荒れ狂う戦火に飲まれながらも強くひきつけられてゆく。　時代背景がなせる業か、血統のカルチャーがなせる業か、成人して白人社会に生きようとする女性ではあるが、、、、、。北極圏に近いイヌイットの村に、一人静かに暮らす老人の許へ一人の若い女性が訪ねて来る。自分でも拭い去ることが出来ない血統のカルチャーへの執着心は、周囲の偏見によることも多分に影響しているようだ。

東南アジアの闇マーケットにおける少女の人身売買を追った映画。カンボジアの日常生活の陰に広がる少女の人身売買を食い止めようとするアメリカ人夫婦には、一人娘を 誘拐された辛い過去があった。人権を重んじて少女を救おうとするのも白人なら、少女を買おうとするのも白人男性。家族を経済的に救済する為に娘を売るカンボジアの古い風習に立ち向かうのは、人種を超えた人間の良心なのかもしれない。アジア経済発展の陰を直視した映画は、やはり考えさせられる。

A Party in Ramadan

Muslim girl Leena is happy to have an invitation for her friend’s birthday party, although it turns out the party is on a day during Ramadan when Leena will fast with her family. Leena joins the party and has a lot of fun, even though she does not eat nor drink.        It is not easy for Leena, but she has grownups’ lovely supports to learn the meaning of Ramadan through her experience.

イスラム教徒の少女が、日の出前から日没後まで断食・断飲をするラマダンの時期に行われる友人の誕生日パーティ­­ーの招待状を受けた。パーティーでポニーに乗ることを楽しみにしながらも、初体験のラマダンも行うと、母親につげた。米国で生活するイスラム教徒の子ども達に、Asma Mobin-Uddinは意欲的に絵本を書いている。異なる信仰を持っていても、暖かく理解し受け入れようとする周囲の大人達の配慮が描かれているこの絵本は、大人達にこそ読んで欲しい絵本とも言えそうだ。

祖父母と孫やひ孫とのコミュニケーションを図ったユニークな写真集。カラー写真には様々な人種の高齢者が登場し、高齢者の多彩なるイメージを広げている。暖かなスキンシップの写真が存分に配置されていて、子どもたちが多くの人達から守られている安心感が伝わってくる。英語は、実に簡単明瞭な文のみ。

Azad’s Camel

In outside of town in Arabia, an orphan boy Azad demonstrates his balancing skill to his friends. A wealthy sheikh sees Azad’s demonstration, and arranges to have Azad trained as a camel rider. Camel racing is frightening and Azad dislikes it despite he is good at it. One day Azad and his camel decide not to stop at the finish line of the race, but run away to the desert. The next morning, some Bedouins discover them and offer them a safe home.

アラブのある国の孤児であったAzad少年が、町の隅で行っていた鉄棒が見初められ、競争ラクダのラクダ乗りにさせられる。しかし、この競争が嫌いであったAzad少年はラクダと共に逃げ出して、砂漠の民の人達から暖かく迎えられた。ブタペスト生まれの作者Erika Palは、幼少時代を冷戦中の東欧で過ごし、ロンドンでアニメーションを学んだ女性。シンプルなイラストながら、暖かさと力強さが出ている。

両親の離婚に直面した子どもにささげる絵本とも呼べそうである。「ママとパパは、いかなる時もあなたを愛しています」とあなたの個人名を入れるページが、先ず最初に挿入されている。２本の足で立つように、自分には２建の家があるときちんと現実を見つめ、それでも、２人の親から愛されていることを確認している。最後のページを色々な色の足で終わらせ、この絵本のメッセージをより深くさせている。短い英語を読む以上に、絵からのメッセージを読む絵本。

自分と周囲の子どもを比較し始める４,５歳の子どもを意識しながら、様々な民族の子ども達の文化や習慣の違いをイラストで描きながらも、同じ気持ちの共通点を指摘している。良く観察されてるイラストは、子ども達の表情も豊かに描いている。ページごとに、同じと違いを繰り返しながらも、子どもの成長をうたっている正に親子で楽しめれる絵本である。英語は短く、大変に解りやすい。

Minnow and Rose -An Oregon Trail Story

In the mid-1800s, Rose, who is a pioneer girl traveling west with her family by covered wagon, comes to riverside to pick some berries. She discovers a village of Native American on the other side of the river, and sees a Native American girl who comes to get water from the river. She acknowledges Rose, but they keep their distance.

１９世紀半ば、幌馬車を連ねて西部へ向かっていた一行は、ある川の河畔でキャンプをすることになった。赤毛で青い目のローズは、川辺で木の実摘みをしていると、川の反対側にインディアンの集落を発見。そして川に水汲みに来ていた黒い髪に黒い瞳の少女と、目と目があった。ミノウとローズの出会いのページは、迫力があり素晴らしいイラストである。言葉や文化が異なっても、子ども同士ひきつけあう好奇心に、感動させられる。じっくりと読みたい絵本である。

2人の男の子が主人公で、親友のことを簡単な英文で語っている。柔らかなタッチで描かれた2人の男の子は、明らかに肌の色・髪の色が異なっているのだが、ビジュアルな違いが解るだけである。グローバル化時代の世界の大きな街には、ごく当たり前の風景となって、様々な人種の共存が進んでいる証拠なのかも知れない。子どもらしいほのぼのとした友人関係が、そしてかけがえのない友人の存在が、イラスト共に暖かく伝わってくる。低学年にも読める易しい英文と内容。
