Chinese descent girl Maggie straggles to use her new pair of chopsticks. Each family member willingly advice Maggie on how to use the chopsticks, and Maggie listens to all of them in turn. But everyone teaches Maggie differently, Maggie gets confused and frustrated to use her chopsticks. Finally her father suggests Maggie to be herself. Because of his encouragement, Maggie finds just what works for her.

お箸を上手に使えないマギーは、中国系の家族達から、ぞれぞれに言われる。祖母や、母や、姉や、兄や、、、みんなのお箸の持ち方はバラバラであり、マギーは余計に混乱した。そんな時、助け舟を出してくれたのは父親。「自分流でいいんだよ」と言われて、マギーは一安心。同じ伝統文化でも、その伝え方にも色々あることを気ずかせてくれる。

二つの文化の比較ではあるが、民族文化ではなく職業文化の比較である。しかも発想が実に楽しく、その発想に子ども心の自由さ、暖かさ、観察力、寛容さが弾けるように光っている。自分達の担任の先生と米国大統領の仕事を比較する発想が、ユニークそのものでもあり、教師の仕事に改めて敬意を表したくなる。童話作家以前に教師をしていた作者の創作力には、脱帽である。

副題は3 Love Storiesとなっているが、冒頭で孫達に奉げると記されている通り、3人の赤ちゃんとの楽しいスキンシップの話。太文字の英語で書かれた詩のような文は楽しい虹色の色彩で、それに合った明るい色のイラストが、赤ちゃんの気持ちを表している。読みながらほのぼのとしたスキンシップの世界に、思わず誘い込まれてしまう素敵な絵本。

Desmond and the very mean word

日系アメリカ人の米国における歴史絵本でもあるが、作者の体験でもある。太平洋戦争勃発後に、日系アメリカ人達が送られた強制収容所に行く前日、親友であった白人少女がブレスレットをエミにプレゼントしてくれた。友情の証でもあったそのブレスレットを、強制収容所に着いてから紛失していることにエミは気ずいて失望する。非情な歴史のドラマにも、暖かく輝く思いが生きていることに、深く慰められる読み応えのある絵本。

Mr.President goes to School
