世界10ッ箇所の異なる国にいる親戚から、それぞれの子ども達が、小包みを受け取った。ページ毎に、左側には発送もとの国と切手のイラストがあり、右側には受け取ったモノを身につけているそれぞれの子どものイラスト。受け取ったモノに各民族の文化的特徴が出ているが、祖父母や叔父叔母との家族の結びつきには、民族の壁はない。巻末に言葉の説明あり。作者Nicki Weissは、数々の絵本を制作した後、小学校の教師になったユニークな経歴の持ち主。

主人公の少女Delilahは、本を良く読み発想が豊かであることが想像されるほど、お茶目で愉快。小さな弟と共にフランス人のベビーシッターがいるのだが、図書館でベビーシッターは自分のネット交信に夢中。図書館員が図書館のルールを守らせる為に、あの手この手でDelilahに対応するのだが、、、、自分の言葉と世界で生き生きとしているDelilahには根負けしそう。イラストの色彩は明るく柔らかく、活字の文字は感情を表すために太さやサイズが変化し躍動的にもなる。

絵本作家自身の体験を基に、母から娘に引き渡されたネックレスの物語。自分の母の話から、ベージ毎に世代がさかのぼり、写実的で温かみのあるイラストはそれぞれの時代を描き出している。住む場所が変わっても、時代が変わっても、娘の人生で大事な時に、愛と勇気を込めて引き継いできたネックレスが、永遠の乙女心の輝きを放っている。母と娘に贈りたい素敵な絵本。

Yes, Please! No, Thank You!

Enjoying Yes/No game with delightful illustration. Each page a question posed and on the other page found the answer either “Yes, Please!” or “No, Thank You!” as showing reactions by multiethnic children’s images.

Yes, Noのゲームをしようと誘われて、ページ毎に質問が出てくる。その答えが右に描かれ, Yes,Please! 又はNo, Thank You! のイラストと共に返ってくる。色々な外見の子ども達が描かれていて、子ども達と共にこのゲームに引き込まれてゆく。片言の英語を喋り始めた子どもに、親が繰り返し教えるこの２つの言葉は何時の時代でも大事で、声を大きくして言う練習にもなる絵本。児童向け英語会話教材には、このような絵本が大活躍するはずである。

Eight years old Sangoel comes the United Stats from a refugee camp after his father killed caused of the conflict war in Sudan.  As following to an old man’s suggestion in the refugee camp, Sangoel keeps his name, which is passed form his ancestors, even living in America. However everyone mispronounces his Dinka name. One day, he gets the bright idea to make a rebus of a sun and a soccer goal on his T-shirt.

アフリカのスーダンで紛争が起こった時、父を殺され難民となった少年が、母と妹と共に米国へ移民することになった。「アメリカへ行っても、祖先から引き継いだ名前を、忘れないで.」と、難民キャンプで知り合った老人から言われた少年は、米国の学校で自分の名前を発音出来ない人達に、読み方をT-シャツに書いて示した 。そのアイデアが、学校の仲間に広がって、、、、異文化圏に移動した時、どの子にとっても名前は大きな課題にもなる。

19世紀半ばに大飢饉に襲われた祖国から、米国へ渡ったアイルランド人が多かった。当時米国では鉄道の時代を向かえ、ネブラスカから西に伸びる鉄道線路工事に多くのアイルランド系移民が従事した。一方カリフォルニアから東に伸びる鉄道線路工事には多くの中国系移民が従事し、ユタ州でこの2つの線路が接続して大陸横断鉄道が完成した。そんな時代背景を知り、この絵本を読むのは大変に興味深い。その後の中国系移民は、チャイナタウンを作って中国系移民達のコミュニティーを維持していたが、経済発展には顧客をひろげる必要があった。中国から兄を頼ってきた少年と、アイルランド系移民の少年が親交を深めて、兄弟と呼び合うようになる話の絵本だが、当時の少年同士の純粋な思いが生き生きと書かれ、イラストも芸術作品そのものである。＞＞＞SHIコレクションにあるYinの”Coolies” とChris Soentopietの作品。

ルイ・アームストロングのあの有名な歌　”What a wonderful world”　が、詩となって描かれた絵本。ページを開く度に、アームストロングの渋い声が聞こえてきそうだ。イラストは思いっきり明るい色彩で、子ども達が歌の歌詞に合わせて指人形劇をしている様子が描かれている。この絵本を通して、改めてこの歌の素晴らしさを再認識させられる。

Naming Liberty

A young girl Gitl in Russia is leaving her homeland for far away America, wondering what name she will choose for her in the new country. Meanwhile a French artist Frederic Auguste Bartholdi is dreaming of a monument he wants to build to honor freedom. Two different stories in the same epoch, and connected with the keyword “Liberty”.

見開きのそれぞれの左右のページで別の話が進行してゆく。左ページは東欧のある家族が米国移民を決心し現実に米国へ渡るまでの話が、右ページにはフランス人彫刻家のバルトルデイが米国への贈り物を思いつき自由の女神像を創作し、自由の女神が米国に渡るまでの話。Libertyの言葉へのそれぞれの人の思いが、様々な形で現実化されてゆくドキュメンタリータッチの読む歴史絵本。
