地球の全く異なる環境に住む２つの家族が、それぞれに家族揃って庭に木を植えた。木の成長と恩恵を世界各地を背景に語りながらも、２つの家族の子ども達の成長と木の成長も記録している。ページをめくる度に流れる時間の中でも、木への親しみと感謝が伝わってくる。子どもの成長と木の成長をオーバラップさせながら、木への愛着をしっかりと伝えてくれる素晴らしい絵本。ユーモア溢れるイラストも、この絵本を大いに楽しませてくる。

Once a Shepherd

This is the tale of Tom Shepherd, tending his lambs and sharing their fleece and wooing his sweetheart, who waves the sheep’s wool to make Tom a coat. But WWI comes, and Tom must leave his beloved wife and his unborn child and go off to fight. Latter, his wife receives the sad news of Tom’s death. Quietly, tenderly but strongly appeals to against the war.

反戦をテーマとした絵本である。オーストラリアのヴィクトリアに住むGlenda Millard とシドニーに住むPhil Lesnie コンビで、羊飼いを主人公にして静かに力強く反戦を訴えている。水彩画のイラストは、醜い戦場の場面さえも柔らかいトーンで醜さを包んでいる。Onceがページ毎に繰り返される文章は、詩のように韻を踏んでいる。平和的なイメージで始まり、平和的なイメージで終わるが、読後に戦争への怒りがずっしりとこみ上げてくる。

コミュニケーションに関する絵本である。英語の言葉”Thank you”等を何時どのように使うのかを、丁寧に絵本で説明している。言葉を発することの大切さを、英語を学ぶ子に教えてくれる。この絵本はタイトルの通りPolite やKindがテーマであるが、The Free Spirit “Learning to Get Along”のシリーズでは、この本の他に５つの別のテーマも取り上げている。巻末にはこの絵本の活用方法が、詳しく解説されている。

Block Party Today!

On the first Saturday of June, everyone on Barkley Plaza is exciting with having a Block Party. Except a girl who breaks her friendship with other 2 girls, and she decides to spend all day in her bed. As hearing louder and joyful noise from out side, it’s getting harder for the silly girl to stay by herself in the bed. It’s a big marvelous annual event of the diversity community.

多種多様な人々が住むコミュ二ティーでのブロックパーティーの日は、６月の第一土曜日であった。いよいよバークレープラザにその日がやって来て、みんなが浮き浮きと準備を始めた。しかし、３人仲良し娘の１人ローラは、１人すねていてベットから一日中出ないつもりであった。外では食べ物が並び、音楽やダンスが始まり、子ども達の笑い声も大きくなった。コミュニティーの暖かさと３人の友情が重なってゆく、ほのぼのとした話の絵本。

原本のドイツ語版は２００８年に、ベルギーとオランダで出版された。ドイツ語から翻訳された英語版が、２０１２年である。両親の別居という難しいテーマを、児童心理を語りながら、丁寧に描いている。一つの家に皆で一緒に住んでいた時の楽しかった思い出から、２つの家を行き来する寂しさ、そして両親二人から愛されている実感が強さに変わってゆく。難しいテーマに意欲的に取り組んだ絵本であるが、父と母の違いの中で育ってゆく子ども達に、他の多くの人達にも支えになることだろう。

Because Amelia smiles as she skip down the street, her neighbor Mrs. Higgins smiles too, and decides to send a care package of cookies to her grandson Lionel in Mexico. The cookies give Lionel an idea and his idea inspires a student who in turn inspires a ballet troupe in England……and so the good feelings make their way around the world. Lovely story to see how we inspire each other in good way.

急に降ってきた雨に、通りを走るアメリア少女の笑顔を見て、ヒギンズ夫人はメキシコにいる孫にクッキーを焼いて贈ることを思いついた。受け取った孫は音楽の教師であり、生徒達とクッキーを分け合った。その生徒の一人がキックボクシングの教師になることを思いつき、実演をビデオに撮った。そのビデオをオンラインで見た英国のバレークラブメンバーが、新しい動きを思いついた。～～～と、物やアイデアが次々とコネクトして世界中を駆け巡り、再びアメリア少女に戻ってくる。世界とのつながりを、たのしく現代風に、多彩なる文化、人種、年齢を超えて見事に結びつけた作品。

100 things that make me Happy

This lovely book features 100 everyday objects and activities from a child’s world that elicit pleasure. The text is in rhyming couplets like as ” bucket trucks/yellow ducks”, and each of the rhymes is accompanied by a delightful illustration featuring a diverse cast of characters.

数々の賞を受賞している絵本作家でありイラストレーターの作品。今風なタイトルが絵本を選ぶ大人達の目を引くかもしれない。好みには個人差があるので、必ずしもこの絵本でとり上げた１００のことが総べての子ども達に共通しているとは限らないが、それこそ親子会話の材料を提供する良い話題となるだろう。シンプルなイラストは、お茶目で楽しくカラフルに描かれているので、多様性を満喫しながら目も大いに楽しませてくれる。

友達について語っている絵本で、自分の周囲にいる様々な友達について子ども達に優しく語り掛けている。子ども達と友情について語り合うことを奨めてくれるこの絵本の作者 Norma Simonは、１９５４年から既に５０冊以上の児童書を世に出した。様々な人種の子ども達が極自然に描かれたイラストは、個性的で印象深い。家庭や教育現場で教材としても使えるし、子どもの側にいつも置いておきたい絵本でもある。
