Cousin IRV from Mars

Teddy isn’t excited about Cousin Irv’s visit.  Cousin Irv is too weird. He steals Teddy’s pillow, eat Teddy’s foods and even plays with Teddy’s action figures. But at school, everyone loves Cousin Irv. Not only from a different planet, he can vaporize things! Maybe cousins from Mars aren’t so bad after all……With simple text and few colored images, but telling about an open mind to accepting the differences.

この絵本では、火星からやって来た従兄弟を描いている。突然やって来た従兄弟のIRVは、火星人の為か、風変わりな言動が見られたが、迷惑ながらもテディーは自分の部屋をこの従兄弟とシェアする。学校に来たこの従兄弟は、教室の総べてのものを蒸発させるので、皆はテディーの友達になりたがった。そしてテディーは、火星から来た従兄弟が好きになった、、、と言った具合に話は進むが、異なるカルチャーを受けいれる子ども達の健康的な好奇心は、相手が誰であっても変わらないようだ。簡素化された少ない色合いの墨絵のようなイラストは、読み手のイメージを膨らませる余白をのこしているようでもある。

Now I’m Big!

The author has published more than 45 children’s picture books with the image of diversity kids, and she has adapted children from different country. In this book, she shows the awesome aspects of getting big. Big kids can do all sorts of things babies cannot; zip their own zippers, drink from a cup, read their won books, and even sleep in a BIG bed! Celebrating their growing up with the energetic text and illustrations.

45冊以上の絵本を制作しているKaren Katzの絵本。独特の明るい楽しいイラストで、左ページの赤ちゃんだった自分と、右ページの幼児になった自分を比較している。Karen Katz 自身、娘を他国から養子にしている為か、他の絵本と同様に多彩なる人種の子ども達が登場する。幼いなりにも自分の成長が確認できるユニークな絵本であり、特にBIGという単語に格別な関心を示す年齢の子ども達と親達にとっては愛読書になりそうである。

I can Share

On the left page; “You can’t have my bike!”, on the right page; “But maybe……….”, on the page flipped up from the right page; “I ‘ll let you take it for a ride!”  Within these 3 pages present one situation how to share. Learning to share is one of the harder social rules for little one to follow, but with this sweet book, it will be a little easier and more fun.

話が達者となり自己主張を始めた頃の幼児に、正にうってつけの絵本である。「私の人形、あなたには貸さない。」と大きな文字で左のページにあり、右にはその時のイメージを表すイラストがあり、そのページ下に左ページよりは小さな文字で「でも多分、、、、」と書かれている。その右ページを上に上げるとその裏には大きな文字で「この人形と一緒に遊べれるよ」とあり、あたらに現われたイラストは笑顔で仲良く遊ぶ同じ子が出てくる。「ボクの三輪車だから乗っては駄目」「でも一緒になら乗っても良いよ」といった具合に各状況が解り易く描かれている。様々な人種の子ども達がShareをする様子には、大人でも楽しくさせられる。

Armando and the blue tarp school

Inspired by the work of David Lynch, a teacher from New York who first began working in a Colonia in Mexico in the early 1980’s. Armando’s family is trash picker, and they live in a Colonia. One day, Senor David arrives and begins teaching school on a blue tarp spread on the ground. Armando’s parents finally decided that learning may help Armando to find different work when he grows up, so he begins attending the blue tarp school.

メキシコのゴミ集積所のゴミを拾って生計を立てている人々のことを知って、ニューヨークからやってきた教育者David Lynchの実話を基に描かれた物語である。そこでDavidは、青い防水シートを敷いて教室とした。その上に集った子ども達の学ぶ真剣さに、David自身が感動させられたそうだ。ゴミだけあさっていれば良いと考えていた親達も、子ども達への教育の大切さを学んでゆく。国際的にも大きな社会反響を得た物語の絵本版である。

Kunu’s Basket: a story from Indian Island

Kunu wants to make a traditional basket, just like the other men on Indian Island. But making the basket is not easy, and Kunu gets frustrated. His grandfather intervenes, and Kunu learns to be patient and techniques from his grandfather. Finally Kunu can make a basket by himself.

祖父や父も作れるバスケットは、自分が育った島の伝統品であり、Kunu少年は自分もバスケットを作ろうとするが上手くゆかない。その様子を見ていた祖父が、手助けをする。祖父から教わる知恵と根気に少年は触発されて、とうとう自力で自分のバスケットを作り上げた。年代を超えた伝統の重みと暖かさが、丁重に語られている絵本である。

The travel game

The youngest family member, Tad is growing up in Buffalo, East Cost where his family has a tailor shop and Tad is surrounded by Polish relatives. After work and a lunch, Aunt Hattie and Tad play their favorite Travel Game with a globe and the book “1001 pictures from around the world”. As they spin the globe, Tad’s finger lands near Hong Kong, and both of them read about their imaginary travel destination.

米国東部のバッファローの街で、洋裁店を営む家族はポーランドからの移民者達。その家族の一番若いメンバーである少年が、叔母と世界旅行ゲームをする。地球儀を回し目隠しで指差した場所を、1001枚の世界の写真を集めた本の中から捜し、そこを訪れた気分になるイマジネーションゲームで、二人は香港に到着した。異文化へのイマジネーションと家族の暖かさが膨らむ、楽しい絵本である。

Zero is the leaves on the tree

ゼロの概念を子ども達に教える為に、日常の風景や生活の中から様々な場面を描いている。登場する子ども達は、多人種の子ども達が自然体で描かれ、数字のゼロの存在は人類共通の概念であることを教えてくれる。最近の米国における児童絵本は、多文化共生社会の担い手となる子ども達に未来の日常風景(米国の場所によっては実現化している)として暗示するごとく、積極的に多民族・多人種共生のイメージを取り入れている。

Pizza in Pienza

Easily imagine how much the author/illustrator loves Italian Culture, after her one year living experience in Italy.

イタリアのピエンザに住むピザを食べるのが大好きな少女が、自分の日常生活とピザの歴史をページ毎に語っている、英語とイタリア語で書かれた絵本。短文の英語とイタリア語の比較は、そのまま両言語の勉強にも役立つ。巻末にはイタリア語やピザの歴史が詳しく解説され、イタリアで一年間生活体験のある制作者の、イタリア文化への愛着がしっかりと伝わってくる。

I am I

Two different boys insist Me-ism and destroy surrounding them, and finally they learn how to calm down. The author/illustrator uses very few words but shows powerful communication with pictures and the natural elements of earth, air, fire, and water. The thought-provoking fable is valuable to learn true communication, even for adult readers.

文字と絵の効果が大いに発揮されている、大変に意欲的な作品。二人の異なる少年が自己主張を継続して周囲を破壊してしまう。その体験から学び、互いに平穏を保つ努力をするストーリーだが、発する言葉が争いの原因となった後からは、文字もページから減少している。コミュニケーション方法や心理学さえも含めて、子どもだけでなく大人にも手にして欲しい絵本である。

These seas count!

海岸を掃除する日に、教師と共にクラス生徒達が集った。海洋汚染について学びながら、生徒達は清掃の必要性を理解する。多民族・多人種クラスの生徒達を登場させることによって、海洋汚染が人類共通の問題であることを強調するのに効果を上げている。絵と写真のデジタル処理コラージュの素晴らしさも、大いに楽しませてくれる絵本である。
