Peach Heaven

Based on an incident from the author’s childhood, and the story is set in Puchon, South Korea, in the summer of 1976. The mountain behind Yangsook’s house is covered with peach orchards, but she never gets to eat a peach as it is so expensive. One day during a heavy rainstorm, peaches begins to fall from the sky, and the girl and her family feast on the delicious peaches. And then she begins to think about the orchard owner who must be worried about the loss of their crop. The same author with The Name Jar.

1976年の夏に韓国のプーチョンで起こった物語であるが、制作者の子供時代の体験が基になっている絵本。少女が住む裏山は、桃の木が植えてある果樹園が広がっていた。少女は高級品である桃は食べたことがなかった。豪雨が襲ったある日、桃が空から降り始めた。お陰で少女や彼女の家族たちは、美味しい桃を味わうことが出来た。そして、多くの桃を失った果樹園主のことが、少女は心配になってきた。The Name Jar と 同じ制作者。

The real story of Stone Soup

The old folktale about Stone Soup (Stone Soup, Cactus Soup) seems popular all over the world, but this is the real story from China. A fisherman hired three Chang brothers to help his job. They were nice boys but lazy. One day the fisherman discovered these boys had forgotten a pot to provide lunch. And then the brothers started preparing lunch for the fisherman by using recycled, reproduced, recreated resources. The hungry fisherman mist to watch all what they had done, but he remembered the taste of most delicious soup as well as he watched the fire heated stones were put into the soup. The recipe of “Chang Brothers’ Egg Drop Stone Soup” is included.

石のスープの昔話は、世界各地で様々に語り継がれているようで、当コレクションの中にもStone Soup と Cactus Soup があるが、この絵本は中国で起こった本当の石のスープの話ととなっている。漁師がチャング3人兄弟を自分の仕事の手伝いに雇った。3人とも良き少年ではあったが、怠け者であった。ある日漁師は、3人が昼飯を用意する鍋を忘れているのに気ずいた。3人はあらゆる手に入るものを利用して、漁師の為の昼飯作りに取り掛かった。彼らの行動の一部始終を見ていなかった漁師ではあるが、腹ペコの漁師は、飛び切り美味しいスープの味と共に火で焼かれた石がスープに入れられたところを目撃したことは、しっかりと覚えていた。「チャング式石入り卵スープの作り方」も巻末にあり。

The Golden Rule

A grandfather and his young grandson find some words posted on a wall, and the grandfather says it’s the Golden Rule. The words are “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” The young boy asks his grandfather questions about the Golden Rule, and his grandfather answers him as using different religious expression, but all concepts is the same. At the end, the detail information of different religious expression are provided.

祖父と歩いていた少年が壁に貼ってある言葉を見つけた時、「これは人間にとっての鉄則」(この絵本ではGolden Ruleと表現)だと、祖父は言った。そこに書かれていた言葉は”あなたがして欲しいことを、他の人にもしなさい。”少年はGolden Ruleについて、祖父に色々と質問をした。祖父はそれに様々な宗教の言葉を使って、答えてゆく。宗教によっては表現が異なるが、概念は同じであると祖父は教える。巻末では、更に詳しく複数の異なる宗教の言葉を解説している。

Nighttime Ninja

By using Japanese traditional art paper for the collage illustrations and very few and short text, this Ninja seems to perform his mission seriously and professionally. And then just before few pages to the end, the lights flip on and his mother catches him, ice cream and spoon in his monads. His mother gives him a new mission which is “getting back into bed.”

暗い夜中に、一人の忍者が忍び出て静かな室内に侵入し、物色を始めた。日本の伝統的な芸術性高い紙を使った張り絵のイラストに、文字は少なく短くて、この忍者が慎重かつプロフェッショナルに任務を遂行している様子が伝わる。ところが最後の数ページ手前で、突然電気がつけられ、アイスクリームとスプーンを手に持ったままの少年は母親に見つけられてしまった。そして彼の母親からの新たな任務は、ベットに戻ることであった。

Based on biography of Maria Altman , an octogenarian Jewish refugee who lived in Los Angeles. Maria sought to regain a world famous painting of her aunt plundered by the Nazis during WWII. She did so not just to regain what was rightfully hers, but also obtain to some measure of justice for the death, distraction and massive art theft perpetrated by the Nazis.

80歳代のユダヤ系難民である在ロスアンジェルスのマリア・アルトマンの伝記を基にした映画。マリアは第二次大戦中にナチスから奪われた叔母をモデルにした世界的に有名な絵を取り戻す努力をしていた。単に彼女の所有権がある絵を取り戻す為だけではなく、ナチスによって起こった死や混乱や奪われた多くの芸術品への法的な判断を下して欲しかった。

Bringing Asha Home
