Arto’s Big Move

Ali & Nino

Based on the novel of love story which was first published in Austria in 1937. Just before the WW one,  Ali, who is a descendant of the noble Muslim family and educated in Russian high school, met Nino from neighboring Georgia in Baku, Azerbaijan. Nino belongs to more European world with Christian tradition, but the two are deeply in love and elope to the countryside. Their happy family life with their daughter hardly keep away from the war.

1937年にオーストリアで初出版された小説を基にした映画。時は第一次世界大戦直前、イスラム貴族の子孫であるアリはロシアの学校教育を受けた青年であった。彼はアゼルバイジャンのバクで隣国のジョージアから来たリノに出合った。リノはキリスト教徒でヨーロッパ世界で育っていたが、二人は恋に陥り、山岳地の村に駆け落ちした。結婚し子供も出来たが、戦争の足音が二人の幸福な生活にも追いついてきた。激動の時代の中でも、東西文化があでやかに混合し融合している見ごたえがある映画。

Based on true story of the power of family’s love.  A five-years-old Indian boy gets lost on the streets of Calcutta, far away from his home. He survives many challenges before being adapted by a couple in Australia.  25 years latter, he sets out to find his lost family in India. Finally he visits his home town in India.

実話を基にした、家族愛の強さを語る映画。貧困家庭の5歳のインド少年が、自分の故郷から遠く離れたコルカタ(カルカッタ)の街中で迷子になってしまった。生きる為に様々な困難を一人で乗り越えた彼は、幸いにもオーストラリアに住むオーストラリア人の夫婦に養子として迎えられた。オーストラリアでの25年間の時間が過ぎた後、彼は自分の家族を探しにインドへと出かけた。

I remember Miss Perry

With encouragement, though, Stevie and his classmates see that the joy their teacher brought is not lost. To feel it, they need look no further than their own memories.

Stevie少年は、新しい学校での最初の日に大変に心細かった。でも、ペリー先生から、「私の最大の願いは、Stevieが今日の昼食を一緒に食べてくれること!」と微笑みながら言われて、その日は素晴らしい一日に変わってしまった。ペリー先生は毎日のように最大の願いを見つけてきた、それは新しい本や、歌や、祝い事であった。ところが、ペリー先生が交通事故で亡くなったニュースは、総てを変えてしまったし、クラスの皆が悲しかった。多くの人達からの励ましによって、Stevieとクラスメイト達は、先生が示してくれた楽しみは消えていないことに気ずき始めた。楽しい思い出を再確認することで、心に癒やしがもたらされた。

My Two Grannies

Alvinaには、心から愛している2人の祖母がいた。一人はトリニダード(カリブ海の島)出身で、もう一人は英国出身。Alvinaの両親が休暇で留守にする間、2人の祖母が彼女の世話をする為にやってきた。しかし、この2人は食べるものも、好きな音楽や話も、総てが異なっていたので、しばしばいざこざが起きた。そこでAlvinaは一日おきに交代で順番に世話をすることを提案したら、それが上手くいった。お陰で二人の祖母は、お互いに心を開くようになった。
