During World War II, a young American nurse meets the handsome and mysterious French planter on a South Pacific island. Seeking respite from the battles around them, they find refuge in each other as their romance blooms in the lush tropical paradise.  One of powerful musicals, which is with song “Some Enchanted Evening”.

第二次世界大戦中を描いた、もう５０年以上も前の作品にもかかわらず、現代に通じる異文化間のロマンスを描いているのに驚いた。カウアイ島のある岬が、映画に出てくるバリハイのモデルと現地で聞いてから，この映画に関心を持った私が最初に見たのは２０１０年。異民族間の心の軌道を表現するのに、歌が大活躍をしているのは、このミュージカルのみならず、「ウエストサイド物語」、「王様と私」や、古くはオペラの｢マダムバタフライ｣も同様。
