オリジナルは２００６年にメキシコで出版され、２００７年のボローニャ絵本コンクールで入賞している。その後様々な言語に翻訳された、実にユニークな点字の絵本である。盲目のトーマスの感覚で色を表す短い言葉が、英語と点字で書かれ、その横にはその色を表すものが黒い紙に浮き彫りにされている。見える人には光線の具合で、ものが見えるが、指だけのその形を理解するのは容易くはない。点字で世界を知る人達のカルチャーを理解する為にも、画期的な絵本である。巻末には点字のアルファベットが付いている。

A couple bought a stuffed bear on a shelf in an airport gift shop, and it was a present to a little boy. The bear and boy became good friends and were waiting together for another couple coming to pick up them. “Mishuka” means a bear in Russian.
空港の店の棚にじっと座っていた縫ぐるみが、ある日一組の夫婦に買われて、初めて会った男の子にプレゼントされた。縫ぐるみはその男の子の友達となり、あの夫婦が迎えに来るのを男の子と一緒に、又じっと待った。ロシアや東欧からの弧児を養子にする組織の啓蒙用絵本ではあるが、作者自身ロシアからの養子を息子にしている。世界の子ども達が置かれている環境を、改めて知らされる。タイトルのMishkaとは、ロシア語で熊の意味。

異文化比較を、見事に具体化した絵本である。オーストラリアの少年とモロッコの少年の生活環境を比較しているが、両開きに製本されていて、正に２冊の本が１冊となり鏡のように対比出来る。初めと巻末の解説は、左から右へ読む英語と右から左へ読むアラビア語で書かれてはいるが、内容となると文字はなく様々な素材を生かしたコラージュ（貼り絵）を写真に撮ったイメージが右左対となっている。異なる生活文化比較だけでなく両方の繋がりを、きっと子ども達は見つけ出すに違いない。世界の様々な生活文化比較をシリーズにして欲しいと、次作品に期待をしたくなる。
