Question-and-answer game between a mother and her son provides a tender conversation with full of love. The child poses his question one after another, and the mother does not ignore any his words. Dynamic collage illustration strengthens the warmness of their conversation.

母親の愛情を確認しようと、次々と母親に質問する少年。子どもらしく単刀直入に、しかも繰り返し繰り返し尋ねるが、母親は無視することなく答えてゆく。温もりのある親子の対話に、読者も引き込まれてしまう。貼り絵の効果が生かされたイラストも、温かみを増してくれる。絵本の中で繰り広げられるこういう対話が、きっと大人にも必要であることを知らせてくれる、親子で読みたい絵本である。

時代の流れに要求されて制作された絵本そのものである。米国の学校現場で生徒達全員が各自のiPadを使うようになりつつあり、親達もインターネットの使い方の対応に四苦八苦している。この絵本では、学校のクラスでインターネットに何でも頼ろうとする子とインターネットの使い方さえ知らない子を交えて、正しい情報を探る方法を学びあう。堅苦しい教科書ではなく、個性溢れる先生達の登場により、大変楽しく子ども達を導いてくれる。迫力のあるイラストも、絵本の効果を大いに発揮している。口語文体の英文は、長文のページが多い。子どもがウエブサイトを評価する際のポイントも、チャートになっている。

Hassan, a immigrant boy from the war zone in Somalia to America, straggles to fit himself in a new school, even his teacher and classmates are very nice with him. Especially language barrier is very effected to him. One day, his teacher distributes art supplies, and Hassan discovers a way to communicate. Hassan’s two different pictures of his home demonstrate the value of art therapy in helping him to make the transition to a new environment.

戦火のソマリヤから逃れて､アメリカへやってきたハッサンは、学校へ通うようになったが、英語が全く解らなかった。担任の先生に絵を描くことを教わり、懐かしいソマリアの色彩を思い切り描いたが、それをだいなしにしてしまった。戦争による心の傷から立ち上がる過程が色彩から導かれ、新しい環境に適応しようとする少年の心が、見事に描かれた絵本である。

街中が、夏の暑さに覆われている中、雨を待っている少女がいた。彼女の母親も、植木が枯れてしまうので、雨を待ち望んでいた。水彩画のようなイラストは、暑さ、涼しさ、冷たさ、爽やかさが伝わってくる。やっと雨が降り、色々な人種の子ども達も外へ飛び出した。人種を超えて、人間の感性の共通性を謳い、雨の恵みに感謝できる絵本。英文は単語が豊富で詩のように語られているので、高学年向き。

At school Ryan tease Dough as calling out him “the Slug” after Dough places last in a running race. At home Ryan’s big brother tease Ryan as calling him “Cryin’ Ryan” because Ryan needs his stuffed rabbit to fall asleep.  Ryan’s father reprimands his brother and he apologizes Ryan immediately. And then Ryan recognizes he should apology Dough as well.

人の欠点をからかって面白がるのは、子どもの本性かもしれない。それが人を傷つけることを知るのには、自分が同じ立場に立った時が、良き機会でもある。学校で友達をからかっていた男の子が、その夜兄にからかわれた。その場を目撃した父親が、直ぐにそれを指摘し、兄が弟に謝罪した。そして兄にからかわれた時の事を思い出し、学校で自分がからかった友達への謝罪を学んだ、道徳教本ともいえる絵本シリーズ。

Jacob crashes into Seth’s toy dump truck while the two are racing their bikes and Seth is furious. Then while visiting his grandmother, Seth breaks accidentally her lamp, but she is not angry with him. Seth realizes the importance of forgiveness, and stops at Jacob’s house to refresh his friendship with him.

友達が自分の新しいおもちゃを壊したことを怒っていた男の子が、祖母の家で祖母の大切なランプを壊してしまった。祖母に怒られると思い、自分の貯金箱のお金で買って返すと言ったが、祖母はその考えに同意しなかった。祖母は彼が怪我してないことを喜び、友情以上に価値のあるものなんかないと、言った。子どもに接する大人にも、読んで欲しい絵本である。

Romina’s Rangoli

Romina has a school project to represent the culture of her ancestors, but her father is from India and her mother is from Mexico. Romina gets a difficulty to come up with one project  that represents the both cultures. When her grandmother visited her, Romina learned about Rangoli, the intricate patterns, and she likes to draw Rangoli  on the sidewalk with chalks.  Romina inspires to harmonize and arrange Rangoli with Mexican traditional arts.

アメリカの学校に行っているロミナのクラスで、自分の祖先を紹介するプロジェクトを作ることになった。ロミナは困ってしまった。彼女の父親はインドから、そして母親はメキシコから来ているのだった。インドから祖母が訪れた時に教わったインドにある伝統的柄をチョークで道路に書くのが、ロミナは好きであった。 しかしそれでは自分を半分しか表現出来ない。二つの異なる伝統カルチャーを、融合させる、素晴らしさを教える良き教材でもある絵本。英文は長文でも解り易く、インドとメキシコの伝統柄の解説も、写真入で巻末にある。

The Weaver

As the morning sun rises, a girl starts her weaving work.  All her thoughts of creatures on our planets and love feeling to them are weaved together with shinning thread to produce a beautiful cloth. At the end of the day, the girl takes off her special cloth from the loom and she starts dancing with it all over the earth. The weaver spreads the extraordinary cloth over the earth to keep us warm and protect through the night.

朝日と共に、少女が地球を眺めながら、織物を織り始めた。地球に見える様々な様子を、見事な色彩で織り込んでゆく。地球にいる人々の、愛情や思いやり、喜びや幸せを、せっせと織り込んでゆく。夕方になって出来上がった布を織機からはずして、少女は踊りながら地球を飛び回る。幻想的でシルクのような柔らかな動きに乗って、暖かな愛で地球を包むような絵本。
