The Golden Rule

A grandfather and his young grandson find some words posted on a wall, and the grandfather says it’s the Golden Rule. The words are “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” The young boy asks his grandfather questions about the Golden Rule, and his grandfather answers him as using different religious expression, but all concepts is the same. At the end, the detail information of different religious expression are provided.

祖父と歩いていた少年が壁に貼ってある言葉を見つけた時、「これは人間にとっての鉄則」(この絵本ではGolden Ruleと表現)だと、祖父は言った。そこに書かれていた言葉は”あなたがして欲しいことを、他の人にもしなさい。”少年はGolden Ruleについて、祖父に色々と質問をした。祖父はそれに様々な宗教の言葉を使って、答えてゆく。宗教によっては表現が異なるが、概念は同じであると祖父は教える。巻末では、更に詳しく複数の異なる宗教の言葉を解説している。

The Weaver

As the morning sun rises, a girl starts her weaving work.  All her thoughts of creatures on our planets and love feeling to them are weaved together with shinning thread to produce a beautiful cloth. At the end of the day, the girl takes off her special cloth from the loom and she starts dancing with it all over the earth. The weaver spreads the extraordinary cloth over the earth to keep us warm and protect through the night.

Peace Crane

After learning about twelve years old Japanese girl named Sadako who died of leukemia caused by the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and it was before the completion of making 1000 paper cranes for Sadako,  a black girl is inspired by Sadako’s real story and folds her wishes for peace inside a paper crane. The paper crane comes to her in a dream and they fly over the world as wishing peace for everyone.

広島で被爆し12歳で亡くなった少女の折鶴の話を聞いたアメリカの少女の平和への思いが、作者独特の美しいイラストで語られている。小学校高学年向きの内容と英語表現。英語を通して日本や世界の子ども達に原爆の悲劇を教えることは、世界平和を築くためのコミュニケーションとしても役立つはずである。
