Silent Night

Based on a true story of 1944 Christmas Eve. German mother and her second son escape to their hut in the forest. She lost her first son by war, and ensures to protect her second son as running away from the war zone in their town. Shortly after their settling in the hut, three American soldiers who lost their way and three German soldiers accidentally appear in front of the mother and son. She provides a shelter for all soldiers after taking away their all weapons and hiding them. Fear, misunderstanding, prejudgment, and all negativity in each ones’ mind are slowly retreated. Their weapon free dinner of Christmas Eve is truly celebrated with their harmonized peaceful spirit.

1944年のクリスマスイブに起こった実話の映画化。第二次世界大戦末期、ドイツの森にある山小屋に戦火を逃れてやって きたドイツ人母と息子。そこに3人の米兵と3人のドイツ兵が現れた。敵味方を共に迎える緊迫した空気の中で、母親は息子を危険から守る為に、全員の銃を手 放させ、そして勇敢にも全員を暖かく山小屋に歓迎した。予期せず8人で過ごすクリスマスイブ。やがてお互いの警戒心や先入観が消えてゆき、暖かで清らかな 気持ちを各自が取り戻してゆく。異文化を超えて通い合う心の感動に溢れる映画。

Failan

Young Chinese Failan comes to Korea to search for her ant, her only related family, but Failan find out her ant immigrated from Korea to Canada long time ago.  Without any fund for living, Failan cannot go anywhere. To get official permission of settling in Korea, she accepts a contractual marriage with a Korean man whom she never meet. Failan’s paper husband is Kang-je who just spends time to play games and has a life filled with pretty crimes. As receiving and reading Failan’s sincere letters with thankful and respecting words for her unknown husband, Kang-je awakes the meaning of life, family and love.

唯一の身寄りを頼って中国から韓国にやって来た若い女性Failanは、探していた叔母がカナダへ行ってしまったことを知る。知人もなく、あてもな い彼女を、都会の闇が追いかけてくる。韓国に留まる為に紙だけの婚姻をし、夫となった人がヤクザの世界にいるとも知らずに、彼女は学んだばかりの韓国語で 丁寧な礼状を夫に送る。逢うこともなく、声を交わすこともなく、全く未知の男女の心が引き合ってゆく、正に純愛。映画全体にある暴言や暴力が、かえって Failanの無垢なひたむきな思いに、切なさを演出している。　グローバル経済の陰には、このような異文化のドラマが世界中に数限りなくあるに違いな い。

Skin

Based on a true story in South Africa, amidst the Apartheid polity. A baby girl is born to Afrikaner parents and they raise their baby very happily. But one concern is that their baby’s skin color is dark despite both parents have pale colored skin. As she growing, their concern expands to serious issue as clearly appearing the darker color of skin and African features. Social reaction toward her affects tremendously their family relations and love.

アパルトヘイト政策が未だあった南アフリカに住む白人夫婦の間に生まれた、肌の色が濃い娘の実話に基ずく映画。両親の必 死の願いも空しく、世の中は彼女を黒人に分類し、彼女自身南アフリカの黒人社会に入ってしまう。母と娘の強い絆がありながらも、肌の色が、二人の間にも深 いわだかまりを刻む現実。その現実に立ち向かうけなげさに、人間の勇気を教えてくれる。実話だけに様々な評価がありそうだが、多くの人の心に、強いメッ セージを残してくれることは確かだ。

Miral

パレスチナ人の弧児たちを集めて教育をしていた実在人物の女性の人生と、イスラエル・パレスチナの政治的な問題に巻き込まれてゆく少女Miralの人生が流れてゆく。1993年のオスロにおけるイスラエルとパレスチナの平和合意に至るまでの歳月が、イスラエルのウエスト・バンクの緊張と共に描かれている。パレスチナ人でもある女優 Hiam Abbass は、Lemon Tree と同様に、この映画でも素晴らしい演技力を発揮している。

An English man, Mr. Bean, wins the trip to Cannes, France, and he heads to the South France by himself without knowing any French language. Accidentally he is chased as a kidnapper and experiences un-expecting events including the Cannes Film Festival, and finally he can arrive in the coast of Mediterranean Sea.

イギリスのテレビ・シリーズで、喜劇俳優として有名になったRowan Atkinsonの映画。イギリス人のビーム氏が、フランスのカンヌへの旅行がクジで当たり、仏語が解らないまま一人南フランスを目指すが途中誘拐犯に間違えられる。最後には、カンヌの国際映画祭に紛れ込んでしまいながらもハッピーエンドで終わるが、ビーム氏は何よりも地中海の海に憧れていた。言葉少ない演技である分、顔の表情やボディーラングエッジを豊かに使って、様々な人達とコミュニケーションしていく滑稽さが楽しい。仏語が解らなくても、ビーム氏と一緒にフランス国内旅行をした気分にしてくれる。

Day of the Falcon

Inspired by the Nobel about Arab states in the 1930’s at the dawn of the oil boom.  After long and bloody war, two kings declared a large piece of desert, the Yellow Belt, neutral territory, which neither king can claim.  But when it is discovered that there is oil in the Yellow Belt, one king breaks the peace treaty and begins drills for oil. Now the kings are at war again, and it’s up to a young prince to find a way to bring peace, and prosperity, to the land.

1930年代のアラビア半島における二つの部族の間に、イエローベルトと呼ばれる地帯が あった。テキサスから来たアメリカ人から、イエローベルトで石油を発掘する話が持ち上がる。アラビア半島における新しい若き指導者は、保守的な父と、進歩的な養父の間で心が揺れ動く。しかし彼は、読書によって得た豊富な知識と妻からの愛に導かれて、国の未来に立ち向かう。小説の映画化ではあるが、現代のアラビア半島を知っているだけに興味深い映画。灼熱の砂漠に繰り広げられる壮大なドラマは、見ごたえがある。

The Edge of Heaven

Six characters are drawn together by circumstances – a Turkish old man immigrated in Germany and his son, a Turkish prostitute in Germany and her daughter who comes to look for her mother illegally, a German girl who loves the Turkish girl and the German girl’s mother.  Fatih Akin, a German Director, is Turkish descent.

ドイツに移民したトルコ人父親とその息子、ドイツで娼婦となっていたトルコ人母親と母を捜すため不法入国した娘、その女性を救ったドイツ娘とドイツ人母親の、親子像が描かれた映画。ドイツとトルコの国籍を超えて親子関係の悩みが浮き彫りにされるストーリーは、映画 London Riverとも共通する。宗教や文化を超えた、親子の愛を力説するこのドイツ映画は、現代社会の迷いに光さえ差し込んでくれる。トルコ人の血統をもつドイツ人監督 Fatih Akinの力作。

The Ramen Girl

An American slacker abandoned by her boyfriend in Tokyo finds her calling in an unlikely place; a local Ramen house run by a tyrannical chef who doesn’t speak any English. Undaunted by the chef’s raging crankiness, she convinces him to teach her the art of ramen preparation……and despite hilarious clashes of culture and personality, she learns how to put passion and spirit into her life as well as her cooking.

言葉のハンディーがありながら、日本人ラーメン店主とアメリカから来たばかりの若い金髪女性とが異文化の垣根を乗り越えてゆく過程を、暖かく描いている。西田敏行演じる自分の味を守る頑固な店主と、ラーメン作りを学ぼうと諦めないアメリカ人。お互いの性格が良く出ていながら、肝心の言葉が通じない歯がゆさがあるが、それ故に真剣にお互いが引き合ってゆく展開が、上手に表現されている東京が舞台の映画。

Veer-Zaara

A young beautiful Pakistani lady, Zaara, is rescued by an Indian Air force officer, Veer, from her bus accident site on the mountain slope. When she almost reaches into the rescue helicopter, Zaara asks Veer to put her down to look for her bag. In her bag, she has a contain of ashes of her grandma who wished to scatter in India. That’s the way to start their lifelong love story, beyond the national borders and all difficulties.

インドの山間を走るバスの転落事故から救われたパキスタン女性と、インド空軍のレスキュー隊員との出会いは、ヘリコプターからつるされた命綱の上であった。ヘリコプターに付く間際に、彼女はバッグを取りにもう一度降ろしてくれと哀願する。そのバッグの中には、インドに葬って欲しいと願った、彼女の祖母の遺灰があったのだ。パキスタンとインドの文化を国境を乗り越えて、そして時間の流れを乗り越えて、二人の愛が試されてゆく。その端々に流れる親の愛を尊敬する気持ちが、この映画に貫いている。特に終盤は、感涙なくして観終えることが出来ない。

Swades : We, the people

A bright young scientist working as a project manager in NASA, USA returns to India on a quest to find his childhood nanny who is the symbol to him of motherhood and family. He attempts to persuade her and to go back to America with her.  But he gets drawn into the life of a village and finds himself searching for answer to the questions of progress and development that the village is facing.

ボりウッドの人気男優 Shahrukh Khan が演じるNASA勤務の科学者が、育ての親をインドの故郷に訪ねることによって、異なるカルチャーの葛藤が始まる。インドと米国、都会と地方、宇宙空間と大地、伝統と開発等など。3時間に及ぶ長編で、ボリウッド特有の歌と踊りがはいっているが、丁寧に喜怒哀楽人生の起動を文化的葛藤を重ねながら描いている映画。ハリウッドではなく、ボリウッドであればこその豊かな文化的演出も見逃せない。とりわけ愛する女性から贈られた木箱の中は、象徴的であり、大変美しい偉大なる愛の表現である。
