日系アメリカ人の米国における歴史絵本でもあるが、作者の体験でもある。太平洋戦争勃発後に、日系アメリカ人達が送られた強制収容所に行く前日、親友であった白人少女がブレスレットをエミにプレゼントしてくれた。友情の証でもあったそのブレスレットを、強制収容所に着いてから紛失していることにエミは気ずいて失望する。非情な歴史のドラマにも、暖かく輝く思いが生きていることに、深く慰められる読み応えのある絵本。

Mr.President goes to School

空の雲へ子ども達のイマジネーションが、膨らんでゆく。ほのぼのとした柔らかで明るいタッチのイラストが、現実と夢の間をさまようごとくに、 子ども達のイメージを歌っている。描かれている子ども達には様々な人種の子ども達がいて、まさに雲への思いにはどの子の思いも同じであることを語っている。英語も短く、大変解り易い。

身体的に異なる特徴を比較しながらも、比較された二人の共通点を指摘している。実に解り易い異文化理解の方法でありながら、見事にその方法が成功している絵本である。英文も易しく簡単明瞭。イラストも幼児にも馴染めれるように、簡単明瞭。きっとこの絵本は、傍において幾度も読み直したい絵本となるだろう。
