When a teacher’s grandfather visits from China, he is introduced in her multiethnic student’s class. With this opportunity, her students present their grandfathers by each way to call him and their grandfather’s story. On the last page, 29 different sounds of grandfather in 29 languages.

ミス・メイが、中国から訪ねて来た祖父を、クラスで紹介した。それを機会に、多人種のクラス生徒達に、夫々のお祖父さんの呼び方とお祖父さんの話を発表してもらった。実にバラエティーに富んだお祖父さんの呼び方があるが、お祖父さんへの思いには共通点も多かった。年代を超えたつながりの素晴らしさを、ミス・メイ自らが生徒達と分かち合う素晴らしい授業となった。巻末には２９言語で書かれたお祖父さんの呼び方が、紹介されている。

約５０年前に出版されたこの絵本は、Printed in the U.S.A.(近年は多くがManufactured/Printed in China)となっている。学校のシェアリング時間に、シェアするものが中々見つからないマリージョーは、他の生徒たちがシェアしないものを考えていた。そしてある日、アイデアがひらめいた。それは父親をクラスで紹介することであった。彼女の父親もかつては自分達と同じ子どもであり、母親から怒られたが、今では高校の英語教師であった。様々な人種のクラスメートが描かれた教室風景に、５０年前の作品であることを忘れる。温かみのあるイラストは、カラーと白黒のページが交互に配置されている。
