In Europe, several migrate ethnics live and one of them is the Roma (or Rom or Gypsy) who experienced, like as the Jewish, of being persecuted by German Nazi during WWII. The movie is based on the real story of Roma family written after WWII by a former resistance-fighter. “Korkoko” means freedom in their language, and the director Gatif’s father is French and his mother is Roma.
欧州には移動型民族が複数いるが、その一つであるロマ族は、第二次世界大戦時にナチス・ドイツからユダヤ人同様の迫害を受け強制収容所に送り込まれた。レジスタン運動(抵抗運動)の兵士の一人が戦後に、当時のあるロマ人一家の実話を書いた。それに基ずき映画化され、監督自身ロマ人の母親とフランス人の父親をもつ。ロマ族のカルチャーが随所に盛り込まれ、独特の音楽と共に家族や自然との一体感がさわやかである。残虐な戦争の足音が刻々と迫ってくるにも関らず、暖か味で満たされるのは、ロマ族のカルチャーのなせる業のようだ。タイトルのKorkoroとは、ロマ語で「自由」を意味する。

Daniel’s son died in Kouch, Japan, and he travels from San Francisco to Kouch for searching his son’s arts left while his son worked as an English teacher at public school. Japan is unfavorite place for Daniel, and he closes his mind toward everything. As getting longer of his stay, Daniel finds the real story of his son’s life, and Daniel’s closed mind opens slowly and surely. Harimaya bridge in Kouch is featured in a old song of Buddhist priest’s platonic love. >>> The director Woolfolk has teaching experience in Kouch, and this is his first film.

この映画の監督兼脚本家は、日本国政府のプログラムで高知県に派遣され中学で一年間英語を教えた経験者で、この映画は彼の初の長編作品でもある。印象深い日本の美、高知の土地柄、人種を超えた愛、芸術の普遍性、親子の絆と、少々欲張りに色々なテーマを盛り込んではいるが、それだけに切り口を変えたら様々な視点からの異文化理解教材ともなりえる。太平洋戦争で父を亡くしたサンフランシスコに住む黒人男性が、家を飛び出し日本に行ってしまった一人息子も事故でなくした。息子が描いて日本に残した絵を探しにやって来た父親は、日本に対する閉ざした心を段々に開いてゆく。詩のように美しく流れるような、映画でもある。

They moved to America and Soraya is born and grows up in America. Despite facing political barricades, Soraya wants to get her identity in her new life. >>> The director, Annemarie Jacir is a Palestinian-American, and this is her first fiction feature.
ニューヨークのブルックリンで生まれ育ったアメリカ国籍の女性ソラヤが、一人イスラエルの空港に降り立つ。ソラヤの祖父は 1948年以前に、現在のイスラエル領下にあるヤファに住んでいたが、イスラエル建国によってレバノンに逃れた。ソラヤの両親は、レバノンのパレスチナ難民キャンプで生まれ米国へ渡った。それ故ソラヤは、イスラエルの入国管理の係官に厳しく調べられた。父が亡くなり、まだ見ぬ故郷にやって来たソラヤのアイデンティティー探しの旅は、決して楽しいものではなかったが、政治の非情に知恵で立ち向かう若者達の明るさが印象的である。

かつてアフリカの某国で、誘拐した子ども達を洗脳教育し、自分の生まれ育ったコミュンニティーに送り戻され、自爆行為で公共施設を破壊する戦略があった。傷ついた子ども達の心を取り戻す為に、国際機関を初め多くのボランティアが活動したが、その出来事を思い起こさせてくれる映画のストーリーである。誘拐された子ども達が子ども兵士として特訓される。テロ行為を平然と行う残虐なシーンも幾つかあるが、一貫して流れているのは、レストランを経営していたオランダ人夫婦の息子と村のアフリカ人少年の友情である。子ども達の迫力ある演技は、見逃せない。

Hardly finding crying ladies in Manila, but 3 ladies take this chance to accomplish their own plan each. Three different characters in the dynamic diverse city challenge to perform as crying persons with full sadness for the loss of whoever they never know.
フィリピンのマニラに住む中華系のビジネスマンの息子が、父の葬儀の準備に奮闘する。中国の伝統にのっとって泣き女を雇うように母親から言われた息子は、3人のフィリピン女性を5日間雇った。3人とも私生活では各自問題を抱えているが、マニラの雑踏の中の日常で、明るくたくましく生きている。とりわけシングルマザーで息子との時間が限られているステラは、生活費を捻出する為にはどんなチャンスにも貪欲に勇敢に臨んでいった。フィリピン女優の Sharon Cuneta 演じるステラは、喜怒哀楽豊かで生きるエネルギーが溢れている。大都市マニラに交差する様々なカルチャーを面白おかしく演出しながらも、親子の情をしっかりと伝えてくれる力作である。
