Stevie has felt so nervous on his first day at a new school. But his teacher, Miss Perry smiles and says, “It’s my fondest wish that you join me for lunch today, Stevie.”, and his first day becomes a great one. Miss Perry has a fondest wish for every day – something new to read, sing, celebrate. However when news arrives that Miss Perry has died in a car accident, everything is suddenly strange and sad. With encouragement, though, Stevie and his classmates see that the joy their teacher brought is not lost. To feel it, they need look no further than their own memories.

Stevie少年は、新しい学校での最初の日に大変に心細かった。でも、ペリー先生から、「私の最大の願いは、Stevieが今日の昼食を一緒に食べてくれること！」と微笑みながら言われて、その日は素晴らしい一日に変わってしまった。ペリー先生は毎日のように最大の願いを見つけてきた、それは新しい本や、歌や、祝い事であった。ところが、ペリー先生が交通事故で亡くなったニュースは、総てを変えてしまったし、クラスの皆が悲しかった。多くの人達からの励ましによって、Stevieとクラスメイト達は、先生が示してくれた楽しみは消えていないことに気ずき始めた。楽しい思い出を再確認することで、心に癒やしがもたらされた。

アルミゲルは、聴覚に問題を抱えながらも、世界中で最も幸せな子だと本気で肯定的に信じている。色々な沢山の友達がいたし、特にアルミゲルと同じように補聴器をつけた親友もいた。ある日、アルミゲルは人口内耳を耳の奥に入れる手術を受け、それに慣れることを学ぶ必要があった。そしてアルミゲルの聞く力は良くなってきたし、何よりも夜ベットに入る時に両親からの愛情溢れる言葉がしっかりと聞こえるようになった。

This wordless book encourages readers to find own words. On the way to school, a young girl spies a book’s red cover sticking out of a snowdrift and picks it up. She opens the book and finds a series of square illustration showing a map, then an island, then a beach and finally a boy. He finds a red book buried in the sand, picks it up, opens it and sees a sequence of city scenes that eventually zoom in on the girl.

文字の全く無い、正に絵本である。北国に住む少女が、雪の中に赤い表紙の本を見つけた。その本を開けた中にあった地図には、南の島がのっていた。その島の砂の中に、少年が赤い表紙の本を見つけた。そして２人の思いが繋がってゆく。文字が無いのは読者自身の言葉で、語って欲しいからかもしれない。地図が大好きで冒険好きな作者らしい、素敵な絵本である。
