The day the babies crawled away

While moms and dads are in a pie-eating contest at the fair, their babies are chasing butterflies, and heading for the trees. Only a small boy sees them leaving and follows them to experience the adventure.  It’s a lovely story of the five different babies described by black silhouettes against stunning skies of many colors that change and glow as afternoon turns into evening.

美しい色彩のバックグランドにまるで切りえのごとくにシルエットで描かれたイラストは、大変に迫力がある。しかも詳細が実に丁寧に暖かく表現されて、シルエットだけで赤ちゃんの多様性まで判断できる。話は、フェアで親達がパイ食べ競争に夢中になっている間に、赤ちゃんたちが蝶を追いかけて這い出してしまった。それに気ずいた少年が、追いかけて５人の赤ちゃんを無事に連れ戻すまでのはらはらどきどきストリーなのだが、実に微笑ましく親子の愛情が一杯溢れ出ている素敵な絵本。

絵本のタイトルのシンコデマイヨとは、１８６２年５月５日にメキシコに進撃してきたフランス軍にメキシコ軍が打ち勝った記念日であり、特にメキシコ系アメリカ人にとっては文化的アイデンティティを誇る祝いの日とされている。祝いの準備に忙しい大人達の手伝いをしたい少女だが、総べて失敗に終わり、祝いの気分になれない。でも絵のコンクールで入賞し、最後には祝いの仲間に入れた微笑ましい話であるが、伝統的な祝いの雰囲気が絵本の随所に表現されている。

My Family Tree and Me

A boy who has the cultural diversity of the family, introduces the father’s side family starting from the front of the book and the mother’s side family starting from the back   of the book. Both sides described from his great-great-grandparents to his parents.  In the center of the book reveals the boy’s entire extended family, shown in one drawing with all the members from both sides identified by their relationship to him.

父方と母方のそれぞれの曾々祖父と曾々祖母から始まる家族の歴史を、わかり易くイラストで描いた写真で紹介している大変にユニークな絵本。父方から始まる表紙と母方から始まる裏表紙が、真ん中のページで出会い主人公の少年も含んだ両家の家族の大集合写真となっている。実にダイバシティー(多様性)豊かな大家族の中に存在する幸せな自分を、ダイナミックに伝えている。ページの構成も楽しいし、イラストのあちらこちらに小さなユーモアも盛り込まれて、さりげなく時代の移り変わりも告げている。

A Mexican girl asks to discover shapes all around us: rectangles are ice-cream carts and stone mutates, triangles are slices of watermelon and quesadillas…..so one. Many of the featured objects are Latino in origin, and Spanish words are translated at the end.

メキシコの少女が、自分の日常生活の中にある形について問いかけてくる。”丸いのはソンブレロ、そしてお月様。～～～そしてトルティーやタコスも丸いよ。”と、英語の文章にスペイン語の単語も挿入されているが、巻末でそれぞれのスペイン語単語の説明が英語でされている。伝統的な物ばかりではないが、さりげなく伝統的なメキシコの日常が紹介されている。メキシコの明るさを落ち着いた色彩に描いているイラストは、独特の趣がある。形に関心を持ち始めた子ども達と、ゲーム感覚で楽しむことを促してくれる絵本である。

The song ” This little light of mine ” is an Black American spiritual dating back to the days of slavery. The music score is included in this book to play and sing and shine your light for everyone to see.

米国の黒人たちによって奴隷時代から歌い継がれてきた[This little light of Mine]の歌詞に、イラストが描かれている。誰の心の中にもある小さな光を輝かせよう、何処にいっても輝かせようと歌う歌詞は、暗い時代に生きる勇気を湧きたてた。そして今でも簡単明瞭で、力強いメッセージは変わらない。黒人の男の子がその光を胸に、日常生活の中で歌いながら行動に起こしている様子が、イラストからにじみ出ている。巻末にはこの歌の楽譜が付いている。

民族的視点からの肌色の違いよりも、科学的な根拠からの肌の役割をわかり易く謳っている絵本。子ども達の日々の生活の中で、肌がいかに重要な役目を果たしてくれているか韻を踏む詩の言葉で表現しているが、描かれている子ども達には様々な人種の子ども達がいる。大変ユニークで意欲的な素晴らしい作品である。米国シカゴに住む著者とイラストレータにによって制作され、シカゴの子ども博物館（CCM）が出版したこの絵本は、CCM内のショップやオンラインでも発売されている。

Dojo Daytrip

黒装束の可愛い忍者が、道場のスクールバスで農場へ出かけた。６人の子ども忍者は、目だけしか見えないが、肌の色や少々見える髪型から、子ども達の多様性が解る。農場では唯一の大人である師匠が、幾度も失敗を繰り返しドタバタ劇となるが、子ども忍者達はこの時とばかりに活躍する。忍者文化がすっかり子ども達の世界に浸透していることを伺わせる様な、実に楽しい絵本である。制作者のChris Tougasは、他にDojoシリーズを２冊出版している。

This is the story of 2 cousins, Charlie in America and Carlitos in Mexico, and how their daily lives are different yet similar. His unique illustration is influenced by the ancient art of the Mixtecs and other cultures of Mexico.

制作者のDuncan Tonatiuhは、父親が米国人で母親がメキシコ人である。メキシコに生まれ育ち、米国の高校に入学した。その後はメキシコと米国の行き来が多く、２つの文化の違いをこの絵本でも上手に表現している。絵本の内容は、副題の通り、メキシコの村に住む従兄弟とアメリカの都会に住む従兄弟の間での手紙である。メキシコの古代アートの影響を受けたイラストは、大変ユニークであり、スペイン語の単語もいくつかイラストで描いた物を説明している。メキシコと米国の比較をしながらも、両方を受けいれている制作者の思いがしっかりと伝わってくる

Based on the experience of the American Author. In 1994, She went to China to adapt a 5 months old baby. Just before the departure to China, she found a red blanket in Kid’s dress shop and bought it. And the red blanket helped to build the bond between new mother and her daughter on each stage of her child’s growing.

米国白人女性である著者自身の実話に基ずいた絵本で、１９９４年に中国に行き生後５ヶ月の幼児を養子として引き取って育てた娘に捧げた作品である。お互いに慣れない母と娘を繋いでくれたのは、中国へ行く前に子ども洋品店で見つけた赤いブランケットであった。娘が成長した今では色あせたブランケットではあるが、今でも娘はそれを大事にしていた。家族の礎を築いてくれたブランケットの話から、家族のぬくもりが溢れ出ている絵本である。

What can you do with a Rebozo?

A young girl introduces the traditional shawl called Rebozo, it’s also called Mexican shawl, found in many Mexican and Mexican-American households.  It’s used as a cradle for baby, a superhero’s cape, a warm blanket on a cool night…..there so many things you can do with Rebozo.  The more detail information is in the last page.

Rebozoとは、何百年もメキシコに伝わるショールの名前で、メキシカンショールとも呼ばれている。このショールが、日常的にどのように利用されているかを、メキシコの少女が紹介してくれる。実用的な使い方、保温としての使い方、おしゃれとしての使い方、そして遊びにも使えるが、彼女が一番のお気に入りはダンスをする時である。明るく楽しい色彩のイラストが、少女のショールへの親しみを良く現している。巻末には詳しい解説と、ショールの使い方に関する質問もあり、メキシコの日常化している伝統の中に引き込まれる。
