We Came To America

From the Native Americans who first called this land their home to the millions of people who have flocked to its shores ever since, America is a country rich in diversity.  Some of our ancestors were driven by dreams and hope.  Others came in chains, or were escaping poverty or persecution.  No matter what brought them here, each person embodied a unique gift – their art and music, their determination and grit, their stories and their culture.  And together, they forever shaped the country we all call home.

この大地をホームと呼んでいた北米先住民たちから、それ以降に岸辺めざしてやって来た何百万もの人たちにとって、アメリカは多様性に富んだ国である。我々の祖先の多くは夢や希望を抱いてやってきた。その他にも、鎖でつながれたまま来た人たちもいれば、貧困や迫害から逃れて来た人たちもいる。どのような理由でこの地に来たにせよ、一人一人が特別なギフトを背負ってきた。例えば、彼らの芸術や音楽、彼らの決断力や不動の精神、彼らの物語や文化。私たちがホームと呼べれる国を、それらが一体となって変わることなく作り上げてきた。

The Star Festival

On the day of Tanabata Maturi, the Star Festival, Keiko, her mama and her grandmother make tanzaku wishes.  Obaasan (grandmother in Japanese) tells Keiko the Tanabata Legend: The Emperor of the Heavens separates his daughter, Orihimme, from her love, Hikoboshi, all year.  On this day (July 7), the two stars finally reunite, crossing a bridge over the Milky Way.  At the celebration, Keiko and her family take in the colorful decorations and eat delicious food like nagashi somen.  But when Obaasan gets lost in the crowd, Keiko and Mama must make their own bridge to find her again- and see if their tanzaku wishes come true. >>>On the last pages, more information about Tanabata is found.

七夕の日に、Keikoと母親と祖母は、短冊に願い事を書いた。おばあさん（日本語の祖母）は、Keikoに七夕の伝説を話してくれた。”天に住む大王は彼の娘の織姫を、恋人の彦星から一年間遠ざけたが、この日（７月７日）に、天の川にかかる橋を通って二人が会える日とした。” Keikoは街の七夕祭りに家族と出かけ、色鮮やかな七夕飾りを楽しみ、流しそうめんやかき氷を味わった。しかし、人ごみの中でおばあさんを見失ったKeikoと母親は、おばあさんに会えるように自分たちの橋をかけてなくてはならない。そして短冊に書いた願い事が叶うかも知りたかった。＞＞＞巻末に、より詳しい七夕の説明がある。

The Turtle Ship

Long ago in Korea, a young boy named Sun-sin dreamed of traveling around the world with his pet turtle, Goburi.  But Sun-sin was poor, so his dream seemed impossible.  Then the king announced a contest to design a new battleship to defend the land.  The winner would sail the ocean with the royal navy! Determined to win, Sun-shin tried to build a model battleship.  Each attempt failed miserably against the powerful sea, and like his models, Sun-sin’s dream sank to the bottom.  Then Sun-sin noticed how Goburi was small but mighty, slow but steady, and impossible to sink.  Suddenly, Sun-sin had a great idea. >>> Loosely based on the true story of Admiral Yi Sun-sin and his Turtle Ship.  >>>>On the last page, more detail of the historical story is found.
