My Dadima wears a Sari

Everyday, Rupa’s grandmother, Dadima, wears a beautiful Indian traditional sari in America. Dadima shares with Rupa all the wonderful things that saris can do from an umbrella in a rainstorm to providing a deep pouch to carry seashells. Soon Rupa’s own imagination is sparked. A note from author and instructions for wrapping a sari are included.

アメリカに住むインド人の祖母はいつもサリーを着ている。孫娘は、素朴な質問を祖母に尋ねた。そして段々と孫娘達もサリーに興味が湧いてきた。祖母との会話の中に、伝統の重みをと暖か味を感じ取る少女たち。そんな孫娘達に、サリーの魅力が生き生きと伝わってゆく。巻末にはサリーの着方を写真入で解説している。サリーの心地良さをそのまま絵にしたような柔らかいタッチの水彩画は、日本生まれのイラストレーターの力作で、表情も柔らかく生き生きとしている。

Belinda in Paris

Belinda has arrived in Paris to perform, but her ballet shoes went to Pago Pago. To add to her problem, she has very big feet. As she and a young dance, Gabrielle, race through the streets of the city looking for a replacement pair, help comes from some unexpected places.

バレリーナのベリンダが、パリで公演をすることになったが、大事件が持ち上がった。パリにもって来たベリンダの特大の特別のバレーシューズが、航空会社の手落ちでパゴパゴ（南太平洋）へ行ってしまった。その夜の公演までに、そのバレーシューズは届きそうもなかった。そこでバレーシューズを作る為にパリを走り回るのだが、、、、多民族社会のパリの様子とパリの伝統文化の中での葛藤が交差しながらも、何とか無事に公演を終える微笑ましいエピソード。作者がパリ滞在を満喫した後に制作されたこの絵本には、パリのエスプリが子ども向けにも溢れている。

Counting in a Japanese Gardenとのサブタイトルが付いているように、日本の神社にある庭園で、俳句を詠いながらページ毎に数を数えている大変にユニークな絵本。見開きのページ毎に、左側には着物を着た少女が数を数えているイラスト、そして右側には英語の俳句が書かれ、下のほうには丁寧にその俳句の英文説明も付いている。巻末には、日本庭園と俳句の説明もある。日本の伝統文化に関心のある人へ贈りたい絵本である。

イスラム教国に住む祖母を一人で訪ねた少女は、祖母を通じて祈りの伝統を学んでゆく。そして、帰国して持ち帰った品々には、祖母の愛情が込められた祈りの時に必要なものばかり、、、。祖母と孫娘の愛情が、伝統の重みに暖かさを与えてくれる。暖か味のあるイラストも効果を上げている。文字は英語とアラビア語で書かれている。宗教に関係なくとも、イスラム教の祈りの伝統を学ぶのにも役立つ絵本である。

Sosu’s Call

African boy, Sosu lives in a beautiful small village by ocean. During all village youth    go to fish for their living, Sosu has to stay home with his dog as he is not able to walk.   One day when a big storm is threaten the village, Sosu hits the drum with wishing the village youth can hear the warning sounds to save the village elders & little children.      >The author,  Meshack Asare is born in 1945 Ghana, and “Sosu’s Call” received “UNESCO Children & Youth’s Literature in the Service of Tolerance” award in 1999.

海と入り江に挟まれた土地に、小さな村があった。そこに住むSosu少年は歩くことが出来ず、いつも家にいて愛犬と一緒であった。ある日、村の若者達が漁に出た後に、嵐が襲ってきた。残された老人や幼子を助ける為に、Sosuは使ったこともないドラムをたたいて、村の危機を伝えた。１９４５年ガーナ生まれの制作者Asare氏は、この作品のイラストも描いている。１９９９年度UNESCO Children & Youth’s Literature in the Service of Toleranceの受賞作品でもあり、ほのぼのとした絵と物語の絵本。

全米にある３９都市を擬人化して、皆がパーティーに集るという実にユニークな内容の絵本である。イラストはその都市の特徴をイメージした人間で、各自が都市のランドマークや街並みを頭に載せている。ハードカバーを開けると全米の地図で３９都市の位置を示している。冒頭には、パーティーのゲストリストとして３９都市の語源や由来が記載されている。各都市の伝統や特徴を学べれる絵本でもあり、米国の多彩なる文化のルーツを再確認できる。

一日の始まりを告げる太陽が昇ってくる時、様々な民族の思いを描いている視点が素晴らしい絵本。英文の文字も、文章と言うより、歌のように配列している。イラストレーターは、Annie and the old oneのイラストを手がけた同じ人であり、この絵本の価値に大いなる影響を与えて成功している。人類と太陽の切っても切れない関係を解り易く語る内容のこの絵本こそ、親子でしみじみと読んで、大事な時間を親子で共有したい。

作者が２００７年に家族でケニアを訪れた時に、現地のガイドから聞いた話しを基に制作した絵本。ケニアのサバンナに草が茂る時期になると、真っ先にシマウマがやって来て草の上だけを食べてゆく、、、、と、大自然の恵みを分け合って共存する知恵を動物達は何百年にも渡って守ってきた。ところが同じ場所に住むマサイ族とキクユ族の間では、ライフスタイルの違いによる土地への概念から、長年に渡っていがみ合っていた。夫々の部族を代表するかのように、少年達による交流に希望を託した、正に異文化理解の手本ともなる絵本。

The Gift of the Sacred Dog

Long time ago, Native Americans lived with dogs who helped to carry heavy stuff, and accompanied them as needed. As following buffalos, one tribes didn’t have enough foods to eat. A brave boy form the tribes went to hills and prayed to the Great Spirit for help for his people. A rider on a magnificent animal came to him and said “This animal is called the Sacred Dog and he can many things your dogs cannot.”  The Great Spirit rewarded the boy’s courage, and the horse, or Sacred Dog, was given to his tribe.  >>> In a history, Spanish people brought horses to the American continent.

かつて北米大陸には馬は生存せず、スペイン人によって連れてこられた。それまでは、犬が重い荷物を運び、人々に仕えていた。バッファローの群れを追いながら、空腹に襲われている米国原住民がいた。その中の一人の青年が、偉大なるスピリットに助けを願う為に、山に登って、今まで見たこともない動物の幻想を見た。そして、その幻想が現実となった。素晴らしいイラストは、色彩だけでなく米国原住民のカルチャーを見事に力強く描き出している

第三代米国大統領トーマス・ジェファソンが、農業普及に貢献した話を学校で教わった。ジェファソンにならって、クラスで豆作りのコンテストをすることになり、Mayaも豆の成長に意欲を燃やす。歴史を語り、友情を語り、自然の恵みを語る、なかなか欲張りな絵本ではあるが、上手にまとまっている。英文購読練習にも利用できるし、巻末にはトーマス・ジェファソンの功績も詳しく書かれている。学校でのクラス活動のアイデアも盛り込まれているし、子どもらしいお茶目な様子も描かれ、縦横に様々な要素が上手に絡みながら織り上がった布のような、素敵な絵本。2年前に制作されたIn the Garden with Dr. Caverと同じ作者、イラストレーター、出版社。
