In 1947, amidst the chaos and bloodshed unleashed when India and Pakistan are split into separate states, Gian, Sikh and a former soldier, risks everything to save a young Muslim woman, Naseem, from a violent mob. Eventually Gian and Naseem fall in love each other and establish their own family beyond their different faith. But their peaceful days are destroyed when Naseem goes to see her family in Pakistan.

1947年のインド・パキスタン分離独立の時代背景で、当時インドに住むイスラム教徒がパキスタンに、パキスタンに住む 非イスラム教徒がインドへと大移動があり、その間に衝突で100万人が殺害されたとも言われている。そういう異宗教への憎しみがある中、シク教徒の元 兵士が助けたイスラム教徒の女性との関係が深まり、やがて2人は結婚して子どもも授かる。異なる信仰にもめげず愛を貫いた2人ではあるが、妻がパキスタン にいる自分の家族に会いに行ったことから悲劇が始まる。ひたむきな愛の強さが感動的であり、実に見ごたえのある映画である。

Liam, 28 years old Chinese-American actor struggling in Hollywood, dislike his alcoholic father. Liam flirts with the teenage Adelaide who is a high school student with free-spirited genius. One day, Liam’s father tells his grandmother in Shanghai died and left her property for Liam. After WWII Hong Kong is still a British colony, and East and West culture co-existed as well as multicultural background people. A married American war correspondent whose wife stays at Singapore and a widowed Belgian-Chinese doctor encounter in Hong Kong. They fall in love, but shortly they are destined to separate to different directions. The American correspondent is sent to cover the Korean War and the doctor needs to return to China changed by communist revolution.  Since the American journalist die at the Korean War, their love story is in the blink of an eye but rests in her hart forever with the famous lovely screen music the same titled on.

タイトルと同じ映画音楽は、主題曲として余りにも有名になった。第2次世界大戦後の香港はまだイギリス植民地であり、東 洋と西洋の人と文化が、頻繁に行き交っていた。その香港で出会った男女。女性はベルギーと中国の血を引く未亡人の医師、男性はアメリカ人特派員で妻はシン ガポールにいた。中国共産党率いる中華人民共和国へ戻らなければならない彼女と、朝鮮戦争の勃発で朝鮮に派遣され戦死する彼。つかの間の香港での恋の 思い出が、甘くせつなく主題曲にのって残る話題作品。ハン・スーインの自伝を基に映画化された。

After WWII, a returning soldier from the war finds out his wife’s treachery and walks away from his house. He encounters with a beautiful Hispanic girl. She is a daughter of vineyard owner and unmarried pregnancy. She is on the way to return to her domineering father’s residence, and entreats him to come with her as pretending to be her husband and her baby’s father. He agrees with her, and his temporally rescuing her transforms to love through helping her family’s crisis together.

 In the mid 1800s Siam, former name of Thailand, widowed British school teacher Anna comes to work as a governess for Siam Royal family. The big royal family with many children welcome Anna, and Anna is horned to teach them English language. However Anna feels uncomfortable about the domineering behave of the king, father of her students. As straggling cultural gap, different social class and language barrier, the king of Siam starts to respect Anna slowly but surely.

ミュージカル「王様と私」のリメイク版ではあるが、Jodie Foster演じるイギリス人英語教師AnneとYun-Fat Chow演じるシャムの王様が、正に西洋と東洋の出会いを素晴らしく物語っている。見事なタイの文化が随所にそして細部にも出てきて、映画の質をどっしと 高めている。ミュージカルのようなリズムや動きがなくても、見ごたえのある作品に仕上がったのは、異文化を融合させようとする名優達の演技力が大いに貢献 しているからだろう。

Young Chinese Failan comes to Korea to search for her ant, her only related family, but Failan find out her ant immigrated from Korea to Canada long time ago.  Without any fund for living, Failan cannot go anywhere. To get official permission of settling in Korea, she accepts a contractual marriage with a Korean man whom she never meet. Failan’s paper husband is Kang-je who just spends time to play games and has a life filled with pretty crimes. As receiving and reading Failan’s sincere letters with thankful and respecting words for her unknown husband, Kang-je awakes the meaning of life, family and love.

唯一の身寄りを頼って中国から韓国にやって来た若い女性Failanは、探していた叔母がカナダへ行ってしまったことを知る。知人もなく、あてもな い彼女を、都会の闇が追いかけてくる。韓国に留まる為に紙だけの婚姻をし、夫となった人がヤクザの世界にいるとも知らずに、彼女は学んだばかりの韓国語で 丁寧な礼状を夫に送る。逢うこともなく、声を交わすこともなく、全く未知の男女の心が引き合ってゆく、正に純愛。映画全体にある暴言や暴力が、かえって Failanの無垢なひたむきな思いに、切なさを演出している。　グローバル経済の陰には、このような異文化のドラマが世界中に数限りなくあるに違いな い。
