Based on the novel by Richard Price. When white single mother claims her car stolen with her 4 years old son in the backseat and happened  in the low-incomers’ community of black people, the black detective senses and tries to avoid all possible troubles behind this unexpected event.

小説の映画化ではあるが、この事件に似たケースの人種問題が、現実の米国社会ではしばしば取り上げられる。映画の内容は、黒人低所得者の多く住む地区で車が盗難にあい、その後部座席に４歳の息子が眠っていたと白人のシングルマザーが訴えた。最初に駆けつけた黒人検事は、精神に支障をきたしたようなその母親から、真実を聞きだそうと努力する。この事件が起きた為、黒人低所得者の地区は閉鎖され、不満を募らせる黒人住民と白人強健派の警察側での緊張が高まり、その間に置かれた黒人刑事は、暴動が起きないように奮闘する。白人のシングルマザーをJulianne Mooreが、黒人の刑事をSamuel L.Jacksonが､それぞれ個性ある迫力ある演技を見せてくれる。

2001年9月11日前日に米国に入国した中東出身男性の、米国における戦いを描いた映画。6ヶ月間の拘束された取調べの後、自由の身になっても彼の米国社会における状況は厳しいものが渦巻いていた。路上で暴漢に襲われた同じアラブ系の男性を助けたことから、彼の米国市民権獲得は法廷闘争と発展した。悲劇からの脱出は、一握りの良心の繋がりが大きな波となって、この映画の中では導いてくれている。悲劇の陰の人々の生き様を、何時の時代でも何処の土地でも、忘れてはいけないことを再認識させてくれる。

Tal slips the letter into a bottle, and her brother throws it into the Gaza sea, where he is on military duty. Latter Tel receives an e-mail from Naim, a 20-years-old Palestinian in Gaza, and  Tel and Naim are trying to understand and change through their tender friendship.

フランスからユダヤ人の家族とイスラエルに移民した17歳の少女が、エルサレムでキャフェのテロを目撃した。日常的に繰り広げられる暴力に、疑問を投げかける英文の手紙を入れたビンを、兵役につく兄に頼んで海に流してもらった。その手紙を見つけたガザに住むパレスチナ人の青年は20歳で母と2人暮らし。インターネットで交信を始めた多感な年齢の未知の男女が、緊張の空気の中にも希望を見出し、前向きに進もうとする姿に好感がもてる。ヘブライ語、アラビア語、フランス語が画面の中で飛び交うが、若き二人の友情がすがすがしい。

デトロイトの黒人住居地区で、タクシーのビジネスをしている黒人家族の実話を基にした映画。父親を亡くした後、母親と息子の一人がタクシービジネスを引き継いでいたが、息子は貧困と犯罪が渦巻く環境から抜け出る為にも、自分は大学へ行くべきだと考え始めた。イスラム教徒でもある息子は、彼が尊敬していた敬虔なるイスラム教徒の叔父を事故で亡くしたり、色々波風あったが、自分の決心を固めた。そして、周囲も目覚めてゆく。これは実際のコミュ二ティーが制作した、画期的映画でもある。

Replaced class teacher is a male immigrant from Algeria. Despite his old teaching style, he awakes the two students’ deeply suffering even no other adults understand.

モントリオールの小学校で、担任教師が教室で自殺してしまった。それを目撃してしまった２人の生徒が、心に傷をおってしまった。後任に雇われた先生は、アルジェリアからの移民の男性教師。ちょっと古風な教え方ではあるが、根気良く生徒達と向き合った。そして、彼は周囲の大人達が見落としている心の傷に気ずいてゆく。何故ならば、彼も深い心の傷を負っていたのだ。弱い立場の人間同士が、心を重ねてゆく過程が、丁寧にしっかりと描かれている。多くの賞を受賞した作品。

東南アジアの闇マーケットにおける少女の人身売買を追った映画。カンボジアの日常生活の陰に広がる少女の人身売買を食い止めようとするアメリカ人夫婦には、一人娘を 誘拐された辛い過去があった。人権を重んじて少女を救おうとするのも白人なら、少女を買おうとするのも白人男性。家族を経済的に救済する為に娘を売るカンボジアの古い風習に立ち向かうのは、人種を超えた人間の良心なのかもしれない。アジア経済発展の陰を直視した映画は、やはり考えさせられる。

現代の米国公共教育の問題点に光を当てたこの映画は、教育の意義を問うだけでなく、思春期の様々な人種の若者達が生徒であり、さらには実話に基ずいた作品であることに圧倒される。Hilary Swank演じる若い新任英語教師は、教育への意欲満々で新しい教壇に立つが、目の前にいる生徒達ほとんどが、暴力と絶望の生活を強いられている環境にいる事実を知る。そして、そこから真の教育を模索し始める。書くことによって声に出来ない思いを出させ、読むことによって他の人の苦しみを学ばせた。この映画のタイトルの基金ができるほど大反響を得た作品であり、異文化理解の視点からも深く心に浸み込んでくる映画である。

中国の小さな村でエイズ感染を疑われて村八分になった娘が、アメリカンドリームを夢見てニューヨークにやって来た。経済格差が世界各地で引き起こしている、違法外国人労働者のドラマである。社会の陰から陰へと生き延びるサバイバル精神には、異文化の奥にある人間の生き様が凝縮されているようだ。決して楽しい内容の映画ではないが、異文化のすれ違いを、第三者の目に滑稽に見せてもいる。米国で反響をよんだ映画The Joy Luck Clubの現代版とも言えそうだ。

The uncontrolled school seems like abandon from students’ parents, teachers, and the community. The new principal definitely needs to protect his school from criminals and to reform it to put on the right track.

ロスアンジェルスの規則も風紀も荒れ果てた高校に着任した校長を、若きDenzel Washingtonが演じている。黒人が多く低所得者の住民が住むコミュニティーにあるその高校は、親達も地域も教育への関心が低く、ギャング団が構内にまで入り込んできた。意欲ある若き校長の奮闘物語であるが、実話に基ずいた映画だけに最後の卒業式は感動深い。すさんだ人間の心にも、良心は存在しているし、それを目覚めさせるのが教育の役割とのメッセージが込められている作品。

アカデミー賞にもノミネートされた、実話に基ずいた映画。ニューヨークのイーストハーレムの学校の子ども達に、バイオリン演奏を教えて音楽プログラムの定着に奮闘する、２人の息子のシングルマザーでもあるバイオリン教師を、Meryl Streepが熱演している。演技力のみならず、バイオリン演奏力も見せてくれるMeryl Streepには脱帽。音楽プログラムの資金集めの為に、子ども達のバイオリン演奏会を開催するのだが、次々と問題が起こる。最後には会場までキャンセルになるのだが、、、、、感動的な晴れ舞台が待っている。人種も年代も超えた音楽の感動物語。
