In 1970s South Africa, amid the Apartheid policy, a darling history teacher is arrested and police officers take her away from the school. This unacceptable event leads her students’ protest action, and Sarafina, girl student living in Soweto-segregated black people’s community in Johannesburg, initiates the protesting movement. It’s expanded quickly among young blacks with uncontrolled hatred against white power. As the result of ravaged chaos, Sarafina loose many her schoolmates’ lives. She needs to find the right direction more calmly and peacefully.

南アフリカがまだアパルトヘイト政策をひいていた時代、生徒達から慕われていた歴史の教師（Whoopi Goldberg）が警察に連行された。それをきっかけに、生徒達の反抗が始まった。黒人隔離地区Sowetoに住む女子学生Sarafinaは、リー ダー格となって白人への敵意 をむき出しにしたが、かえって流血騒動に発展してしまい多くの学友を失った。気持ちの高揚を、Sowetoの若者達が迫力ある歌と踊りで現している。ネル ソン・マンデラが大統領となった新生南アフリカ共和国は、人種分離ではなく共存の多民族社会へと生まれ変わったが、長く苦しい道のりであった。

But soon Betty finds her husband doesn’t intend to bring his family back to America….ever. She may return, he says, but their daughter must stay. As a stranger in a foreign land, Betty has no money, no friends and no legal right of a parent. In a hostile, war-torn country, where even the slightest misstep can mean death, she makes a desperate bid to escape with her child.

1984年、アメリカで結婚したイラン人の夫と5歳の娘と一緒にテヘランの夫の家族をを訪ねたアメリカ白人の母親。米国での職を解雇された夫は、米国に戻らずイランに家族で住むと言い出した。アメリカへの憎悪が外では渦巻き、米国にいた時とは人が変わったように暴君となった夫に、密やかに娘を連れて米国への帰還を企てる母親。実話を基にした映画だが、イランの法律では親権は全て夫にあり、文化の違いだけでなく法律の違いが重くのしかかってくる。異民族結婚の増えた今日、世界中でこの種の問題が深刻化しているだけに、深く考えさせられる。

この映画の鑑賞者の評価は、2極端に分かれるようだ。世界に耐えることのない難民問題の現場を背景としたラブロマンスの展開は、各自の受け取り方の評価に任せるより他はない。確かなことは、グローバル化した経済と情報によって、今まで見えていた実感していた人間の問題が、ともすると遠い世界のこととして心の片隅に追いやっている事実は、世界の恵まれた環境にいる人達に自責の念を起こさせるようだ。2001年にUNHCR（United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees）の親善大使となったAngeline Jolieが、世界各地の難民キャンプを実際に訪れた日記が出版された同時期に製作された映画。必見の価値は大いにある。

2002年にパキスタンで誘拐・殺害された米国人ジャーナリストDaniel Pearlの実話に基ずく映画。911の事件の後、緊迫している米国とイスラム諸国との関係修復の為に多くのジャーナリストが動いているが、その前線は実に異文化の緊張そのもの。異文化理解の言葉さえ、空しく響く。失踪した夫を必死で探す妊婦の妻を演じたAngeline Jolieの意欲作でもあり、製作にもある種の危険が伴った映画。「人の心の中で生まれる怒りや憎しみを、いかにコントロールするか」それにはやはり、日ごろからの異文化理解より他にないのだろう。

Rizwan Khan, an Indian and Muslim man with Asperger’s syndrome moves to San Francisco and meets a vivacious single mother who is a Hindu. They form a special bond, in spite of their different religions, and fall in love. They have happy days until the tragedy of 911 conspire to tear them apart. Rizwan decides to take a journey across America to see the President and tell him the important message.

アスペルガー症候群のあるイスラム教徒のハーンは、アメリカに移住し,ヒンドー教徒の女性と結婚する。しかし911の事件で幸せだった結婚生活が一変する。「私はテロリストではない」との一言を伝える為に、一人で米国大統領に会うための旅に出る。彼の一途な思いに、周囲の人達が目覚めてゆく感動物語。このインド映画は、イスラム諸国でも上映されて感動されたとのこと。イスラム教徒には、アスペルガー症候群というオブラートのお陰で、抵抗少なく自分のあるべき姿を映すのに役立ち、非イスラム教徒には、先入観が作り出す誤ったイメージを訂正するのに大いに役立つ。何れにせよ、宗教を超えて,予期せぬことに立ち向かう人間の勇気と素晴らしさに、心が大いに揺さぶられる映画である。

学校のスポーツ競技としてアメリカで人気のあるアメリカン・フットボールの選手とコーチの物語。アメリカにおいてまだ白人と黒人の差別が厳しかった時代、ある高校のフットボールのコーチにDenzel Washingtonが演じるコーチが派遣されてきた。彼は人種の壁を乗り越えた強いチームを作ろうと思考錯誤する。高校生の選手同士の葛藤、選手と家族や友たちとの葛藤，コーチ同士の葛藤、タイタン・チームと他のチームとの葛藤、学校と地域との葛藤と様々な苦境を乗り越えて、タイタン・チームの選手達が素晴らしい現実を築く感動的物語。

多民族社会ロスアンジェルスの日常を描いた映画だが、異質文化の隣り合う緊張感と先入観からの不安が、連鎖反応を起こす事実をリアルに描いている。決して楽しい映画ではないが、異文化理解の重要性をしっかりと教えてくれる。2006年度のアカデミー作品賞を受賞した作品。
