A rainy day isn’t going to dampen the spirits of these preschoolers. As they empty their toy box, they become bus drivers and firefighters, dinosaur and hungry bears. Every item they find is inspiration for a new activity.

” Dragon Dancing ” と同じコンビの制作者達であり、絵本の仕様も話の内容の背景も似ている。雨の日のスクール内で遊ぶ子ども達が、ドレスアップ小道具の入った箱の中から次々と物を見つけては、子供同士のイマジネーションを広げてゆく。この絵本でも英文は短く音を表す単語が多いが、この絵本では色の名称を強調している。幼い子ども達の大好きな [～ごっこ]  遊びの心を、楽しく描いているので、大人達にも子ども心を呼び覚ますだろう。

After reading a book about dragons with their teacher, these preschoolers decide to make their own dragon out of colored paper, yarn, feathers and themselves. Soon they are out the door, onto the playground and into another world of imagination.

三歳児以上の子ども向けとなっているので、この絵本の設定は学校でも保育園・プレスクールになるのだろう。先生が子ども達にドラゴンの絵本を見せながら、ドラゴンの話を聞いた子ども達が、皆でどんどんとイマジネーションを膨らませてゆく。メイ・リンの誕生日を祝うのに、ドラゴンごっこが始まった。子ども達の多様性を現したイラストは、再生紙のような色合いのバックグラウンドに、明るく楽しく描かれている。英文は短く、音を表す単語が多い。

Molly cannot wait to share her grandma’s crystal with all her classmates, the special crystal she looks at each night as she fells asleep.  Everyone crowds around, eager to see it.  But Russel runs by with his flashy, water-spurting dinosaur. Everyone’s attention are gone from the crystal, and Molly ‘s eyes are filling with tears. Miss Plumberry catches Molly’s situation and understands her feeling.

モーリーは祖母からもらったクリスタルを学校へもって行って皆に見せるのを楽しみに、その朝学校へ出かけた。素敵な一日になりそうであった。クラスの皆もモーリーが持っているクリスタルに集ってきた。ところがその時ラッセルが、大きなダイナソウを抱えて入ってきた。そして、皆の関心はそちらへ向ってしまった。一人寂しそうにしているモーリーに気ずいたプラムベリー先生は、モーリーに理由を尋ねると、先生自らがそのクリスタルに大いなる関心を示した。すると、皆もクリスタルに再度寄ってきた。児童心理が微笑ましく描かれている心暖まる絵本である。

John Hercules Po is only boy in his Kindergarten class and there are 19  girls in the class. His elder brother in 2nd grad , teases him that  John Hercules will become girlish with their influence. But John Hercules declares he will change 19 girls to tough town-boys. John Hercules sets several stages for his training 19 girls, however all girls are exciting with each challenge, and they do very well. As a result, John Hercules enjoys to play with 19 girls and his elder brother also join them.

ヘラクレスと言う強そうな名前のジョンが幼稚園に入園したら、何と彼のクラスには１９人の女の子がいた。ジョン・ヘラクレスは、クラスでたった一人の男の子であった。２学年生の兄はジョンが女の子達に影響されて女々しくなると言ったが、ジョンは彼女達をタウンボーイ（活発で勇ましい）にしてやると宣言した。毎日教室の外に出る度に、ジョンはクラスメート達を彼の空想の世界に引き込んだが、彼女達はその世界を思い切り満喫した。そして最後には、２学年生達も仲間入りすることになる。ユニークな視点から、子どもらしい発想を加えて、クラスの友情を語っている大変楽しい絵本。

A girl’s white haired teacher has long teaching career and she was a teacher of her mother and her grandmother.

白髪の女性教師は、母親も祖母も教わったことがある程、同じ学校で教えていた。主人公の少女は、何故そんなに長く教師をしているのだろうと、子ども心で色々と想像する。多民族の生徒たちがいる教室の日常を語り描きながら、少女は教師を観察している。地域社会に密着して長い時間をかけて築き上げた教師の教育魂が、暖かく子ども達にも読者にも伝わってくる。難しい言葉を使った教育論よりも、親しみ易いイラストで教室の日常を描いたこの絵本は、教育の大切さを子ども達に伝えるのに大きな成果を果たしている。

図書館で働くブルック嬢は、大の本好き。そして子ども達が本を好きになるように、あらゆる努力を惜しまない。読み聞かせる本の主人公になりきったり、小道具や衣装まで用意したり、、、でもちょっと変わった主人公のこの子は、全く本が好きになれなかった。ところが“Warts”(いぼ）の言葉にいきなり触発されてしまう。本との出合いを、面白おかしく描いている大変にユニークな絵本。
