アフリカにある架空の王国ザムンダの王子は、２１歳になっても何一つ自分でやったことがなかった。結婚相手も、父親である王に決められそうになった時、総て言いなりになる女性よりも自分の意志を持っている女性と結婚したいと、王子は突然目覚めた。Eddie Murphy 演じる王子は、そんな理想の女性と出会う為、身分を隠してニューヨークで労働者階級の生活を始めた。シンデレラ物語の異色版とも言えそうであるが、米国における黒人やアフリカ人への固定観念を、痛快に笑いながら打ち壊す大きな成果があった映画。アフリカの伝統美と欧州の優雅な美しさが、大道具小道具そして衣装に見られ、見事に演出効果を上げている。

1935年生まれのWoody Allenが脚本、監督、マジシャン役で主演をしている。Scarlett Johansson演じるジャーナリストを目指す若い米国女性が、ロンドンに来てマジックの舞台に偶然立ったら、英国人ジャーナリストの亡霊から連続殺人事件の特だね（スクープ）を追う様に告げられた。マジシャンの協力を得て、彼女は英国人青年貴族に接近してゆく。邦題からイメージするサスペンス性よりも、主役の２人の早口な会話に年代のカルチャーの違いもチラつきながらユーモア性を出している。長年に渡って休むことなく映像や言葉で発信されるWoody Allenの多彩なる表現力は、幼い時からの異文化体験から培われた賜物かもしれない。この映画もその一作。

Mexican playboy Valentin living in Acapulco was trained by his father how to control and overcome his own nightmare when he was little. One day playboy Valentin spent time with an American girl traveler, and few months latter surprisingly she knocks his door to leave a baby in Valentin’s hands and she never returns. Valentin goes to Los Angeles for searching the baby’s mother, but hopeless. Without any other choice, the ex-playboy finds a stuntman job in Hollywood and settles in Los Angeles to raise his baby girl, Maggie. Seven years old Maggie helps her father to  translate, as Valentin’s cannot understand English even at his jobsites in Hollywood. On the other hand, Maggie lives in the fantasy world  while she believes her world traveling mother will come home to be with her one day. It’s a comedy and silly story, but powerful messages in the ending. >>> The director Eugenio Derbez written the scrip and also starring role of father.

この映画の監督は、脚本も書き主演男優としても活躍して、一人三役をこなしている。物語は、少年時代に父親から恐怖心克服の手荒い指導を受けて育ったメキシコはアカプルコに住むプレイボーイが、ひょんなことから自分の娘だと告げられた赤ちゃんをロスアンジェルスで育てることになる。英語も学ばず、何とかヒスパニック系のコミュニティーで頑張り娘も７歳に成長したのだが、、、、。ファンタジーの世界に生きる娘に、周囲からの父親への厳しい目が向けらたが、そこには揺ぎない父親の愛情があった。楽しく、そしてとっぷりと感動に浸してくれるメキシコ映画である。バイリンガルである子役の少女の演技力は､見逃せない。

アイダホの北米原住民居留地に住んでいる２人の青年が主人公で、監督本人も北米原住民である。22年前の独立記念日に、火事になった家の２階から投げ落とされた赤ん坊がトーマスであった。その子を拾ったビクターの父親。両親を火事で亡くしたトーマスは、ビクターの父親を実の父親のように慕っていたが、12歳の時に家を飛び出したきりの父親をビクターは憎んでいた。その父親の遺灰を、２人でアリゾナまでバスに乗って引き取りに行く。北米原住民の誇りと心の痛みとユーモアが混ざり合って、素晴らしい作品に仕上がっている。北米原住民へのステレオタイプなイメージを変えた映画ルネッサンスの代表作としても、評価が高い映画。

Floe immigrates from Mexico to Los Angels with her daughter, Cristina, but Floe cannot speaks English well. Luckily Floe finds a job as a housekeeper of the family Clasky, and Floe and Cristina move in with the Claskys for the summer. Cristina helps her mother to translate, but Floe is worry that her daughter is rapidly embracing the American way of life.  The title “Spanglish” is created by mixing Spanish and English.

娘と２人きりの生活を守る為に、メキシコから母と娘はロスアンジェルスにやって来た。英語が解らない母は、家政婦の仕事を得た。言葉が通じないながらも、親子の思いは通じ合える。いつも娘に通訳を頼んでいた母だが、やがて自分で自分の言葉を話す必要性に気ずかされ、英語の勉強を始める。英語の言葉を使い、米国のライフスタイルや価値観にどんどん馴染んでゆく娘に、頼もしさと共に不安も感じる母。異なる文化圏で、青春を迎える子どもを持つ親の心配と不安が、明るいタッチで良く描かれている。タイトルの Spanglish は、Spanish と English の合成語。

次男が結婚することになったのだが、その次男はコロンビアからの養子であり、結婚式には産みの母が参加することになった。ところが米国の両親は、熟年離婚している。敬虔なるカソリック教徒の産みの母が滞在する間、結局両親は結婚していることに。英語が喋れないながらも、次男の産みの母は色々な状況を見逃さない、、、ドタバタと繰り広げられる家族ドラマ。家族の秘密が次々と明かされ、、、、それでも、皆夫々の愛情を確認しあう。Diane Keaton と Robert De Niroが、離婚しながらも、オープンできわどい友情を育む熟年カップルを好演している。

時代背景は1950年の朝鮮戦争であり残虐な戦争シーンもあるのだが、実に綺麗な映像と純朴なトンマッコル村の人々が、不思議なファンタジーの世界を作り出している。この映画は、誰もが持つ憎しみや恐怖心と願いや癒しを対比しているのかもしれないが、異文化理解の視点からは、人民軍（北朝鮮）と韓国軍と言葉の解らぬ米兵士が、村人達の純朴で温かな心に染まってゆく過程を見逃せない。観終わった後に、醜いシーンより以上に美しいーシーンと笑いが心に浸み込んでいるので、あえてコメディーに分類した。

小さな映画製作会社の作品ではあるが、予期せぬ大反響を数々の国際映画祭で巻き起こした映画。　主人公のギリシャ出身の億万長者は、妻を亡くしても３人の子ども達と優雅な生活をしていたが、金融危機の煽りを受けて一夜にして財産を失う。ロンドン金融・ビジネス街の立派な建物を背景に再起への意欲を燃やす主人公に、相対するような人間味溢れる兄弟が突然出現し、真の幸福へと導いてくれる。　近代都市のロンドンの姿と、新移民達が助け合いながら住む質素な通りのロンドンの対比が興味深い。コメディー・タッチで主人公の心が和らいでゆくのに、軽快なギリシャ音楽の効果は多大で、まさに欧州経済共同体におけるギリシャ国への応援歌のようでもある。
