Goyangi Means Cat

When Soo Min comes from Korea to live with her new American family, she struggles to learn English and adjust to new surroundings. She finds great comfort in the family’s cat, Goyangi, until he runs away. But Soo Min discovers the cat has returned to home. This gentle story reveals that home is truly where the heart is. On each page Korean words appear in the background illustration, and explanations of each words’ meaning  are included.

国際養子縁組で、韓国から少女を迎えたアメリカ白人夫婦。その少女が新しい家庭で、真っ先に心通わせたのは、その家の猫であった。児童心理を上手に解り易く描きながら、少女の気持ちを表現する為に、東洋的なデザインの紙と西洋的なデザインの紙を貼り付けアクリルや油の絵の具で、独特の雰囲気を表している。ハングル文字も、イラストの一部のごとくに各ページに書かれている。文中でこの絵本で使うハングル語の単語も説明している。

地球の全く異なる環境に住む２つの家族が、それぞれに家族揃って庭に木を植えた。木の成長と恩恵を世界各地を背景に語りながらも、２つの家族の子ども達の成長と木の成長も記録している。ページをめくる度に流れる時間の中でも、木への親しみと感謝が伝わってくる。子どもの成長と木の成長をオーバラップさせながら、木への愛着をしっかりと伝えてくれる素晴らしい絵本。ユーモア溢れるイラストも、この絵本を大いに楽しませてくる。

表紙の中央が丸く抉られていて、そこから地球が顔をだしている。タイトルどおり、まさに地球の絵本である。地理ではなく、いかに地球を大事にしたら良いか、その理由も語り、幼い子ども達にも解り易く具体例とイラストでまとめている。描かれている人物は、カラフルな色彩の人達。動物達や昆虫も鮮やかな色彩で楽しく描かれている。カリフォルニアのバークレーに住み、３０冊以上の絵本を創作しているTedd Parrのウエブサイトは：www.toddparr.com

Most of children, who starts a new school, have fears and feel nervous naturally, but this book encourage new students with heartfelt welcoming to the school. Each time to open the extended page as a door, you feel to enter into the various scenes of school site and meet different people who are waiting for you. It will help anxious new students and promote the excitement that soon overcomes first-day fears.

４歳から７歳向けとなっているが、この絵本を読むと大人でも学校へ行きたい衝動にかられる。学校という大きな社会組織に始めて入るに際して、家庭しか知らなかった子ども達には大きな不安と戸惑いがあるに違いない。両開きの右側のページにあるドアを開ける度に、折られていたページが更に右側に開き、中の様子や新しく出会う人達を紹介してくれる。明るい色彩と貼り絵が、楽しさを増している。登場する子ども達は、もちろん多様なる外見の子ども達である。長年の図書館での教育者としての Judi Moreillon の思いやりが、随所に活かされている絵本。
