Jake, black veteran of the Vietnam War, has being living alone in the forest for 35 years as hiding from long buried memories.  But one day, old military friend suddenly appears in front of Jake with an Asian girl, and entreats Jake to look after his daughter as she will be with nobody after his reminding short life by illness and her mother already died.  Without waiting for Jake’s response, the ill old friend despairs, and Jake’s new life starts with struggling to live with the girl until she changes him forever.

ベトナム戦争の帰還兵で３５年間も人を避けて森の中で暮らしていた主人公の元へ、部下だった一人が娘を連れて訪ねてき た。母親を亡くし、自分の余命も少ない故に、一人娘を預けに来たのだ。断っているにも関わらず、父親においてゆかれたベトナム系の少女との喧嘩の日々が始 まる。頑固で人嫌いな黒人老人の主人公とあどけない少女との異文化の葛藤が、やがて強い愛情に変わってゆく。実戦に参加し精神障害を負った帰還兵が、米国 では今も絶えない。純粋な愛こそが癒しであると語るこの映画への退役軍人達からの評価も高いし、深く心打つ作品である。名優達に囲まれた中で、少女役の ゾーイ･ウィーゼンバウムの演技が光っている。
