3人の子どもの母親であるタイ国育ちの作者が、幼い時のタイ国での思い出を基に、制作した絵本。タイ国の田舎で、子どもを寝かそうと必死の母親に、色々な自然界の音が耳に聞こえてくる。昆虫やら動物やらに、静かにするように母親が哀願する。やっと静かになった頃には、母親自身が眠り込み、子どもは大きく目を開ける。微笑ましい母子の情景が、タイ国の自然の中で生き生きとしていて、イラストも良くマッチしている。

学校で虐めにあう弟を守る為に、夏休みの間に姉は空手のクラスを勧められた。空手は自己防衛のみならず自己コントロールと自信を強化し争いを避ける手段であることを先生から教えられた。姉は空手を学びながら、読者にも空手の紹介をしてゆく。道場では様々なこどもが参加していて、帯の色(級によって異なる)も色々である。秋に学校が始まると、空手を習い始めた姉を知って、いじめっ子達は弟からも遠ざかった。そして弟も道場通いを始めた。制作者にとって始めての作品であるが、解り易く意義深くそして楽しく空手を紹介してくれる。

中国本土で活躍していた父親は、１９６０年代の革命の嵐の中で、家族揃って香港に移住した。そして、香港でのチャイニーズオペラの世界で音楽家として成功を収めた父とその息子の話が、この絵本となった。少年の夢を勇気つける父親の姿が、確かな愛情として描かれている。作者兼イラストレーター自身の、自伝的話である。巻末には時代的背景と父親の人生の説明もある。６０年代半ばには家族揃って米国に移住し、自分のキャリアよりも家族との連帯を選んだ父親は、米国で偏見と戦いながらもコックとして２５年間働いた。制作者から父親に捧げた作品でもある。
