The Yellow Tutu

Margo is excited about her birthday gift. It’s a yellow tutu, and she cannot stop her imagination to expand. Many kids laugh at her enjoyment of yellow tutu usage and make her tears come, except Pearl who has a pink tutu and joins Margo’s imagination game.

誕生日のプレゼントに黄色いトゥトゥをもらった嬉しさから、それを帽子のように頭に被って学校へ出かけた。ところが学校では皆から笑われた。だだ一人、彼女のイマジネーションごっこに付き合う女の子がいた。その子は、自分でもピンク色のトゥトゥを持っていた。トゥトゥの柔らかさと子ども達の豊かな表情が、実に見事に描かれている素晴らしい絵本。ページを開けるワクワク感を味わえる。２人の少女は異人種なのだが、各々の特徴も優しく暖かく描かれている。

異人種の両親を持つ双子の兄妹が、混血であるが故に個性ある自分を誇りに思う。日常的に子ども達が接する情景の中で、父と母の個性を受け継ぐ子どものたくましさが素晴らしい。再生紙を使用している為、色彩は華やかではないが、子ども達の生き生きとした表情から明るさと暖かさが溢れる。巻末には自分のことを記録するページもあり、混血の子について親子で議論する提案もされていて、制作者達の熱い思いが伝わってくる。

サブタイトルのAffirmationについてWords that you think or say, and believe to be trueとの解説が冒頭にある。絵本の内容は、遊園地に友達と行った状況で、様々な思いを例にあげて、問題の解決を導いている。ネガティブな思いをポジティブな言葉や行動に変えることにより、より良い結果や幸福な人生が開けることを、幼い子どもの頃から学んで欲しいとの、制作者達の願いが込められた絵本。明るく解り易いイラストも、その効果を上げていて楽しめれる。

.何もしないことが、いかに現代社会には必要であるか、、、、、予定がビッシリと組まれ、常に時間に追われ、何かしていないと退屈でどうにもしようが無い現代の子ども達に、何もしないことの素晴らしさを語っている。何もしないことは、想像力を豊かにし、自分の周りの気ずかなかった自然の動きに目覚めさせ、自分の存在を確認させてくれる。人間はHuman being であり、Human doing ではないと気ずいた作者らしい。イラストレーターも、大自然の成長に見られる８つのパターンを参考に各ページの構図を描いている。実に多くの気ず気が盛り込まれた、大変心地よい絵本である。

黒人の母親と白人の父親の娘である主人公が、両親をしっかりと観察している。二人の違いを楽しく発見しながら、その中間に位置する自分の存在を「これでちょうど良い」と肯定していて実に楽しい。この絵本は、白人の作者であるM.W.D.が、混血の自分の孫に贈る為に書いた絵本であり、祖母の暖かい思いが随所に溢れている。２０年前の作品とは思えぬほど、今日でも生き生きとしている内容である。

ベストセラーとなった”Chicken Soup for the Soul” (by Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hansen) からの話を選び、子ども向けに再生した作品の一つ。恥ずかしがり屋の少女が、転向した新しい学校へ一人で行く日が来た。朝食も落ち着いて食べれないほど緊張した妹に、姉がビスケットの袋をくれた。そのビスケットを分け合って、友人をつくるようにと。同じビスケットの袋を、バス停のベンチで見つけた少女は、気持ちがすっかり混乱していた。こども心を上手に語りながらも、大人も納得させられる絵本。
