Inspired by the author’s experience of the Blackout in Brooklyn, NY.  A girl is looking for someone who join her game, but nobody in her family will not. They are busy with own matter. However once all lights out, it’s blackout, everyone starts to care for the others, even neighbors. The girl love the blackout! Since then, her family enjoy the game together as turning off house electric lights.

ニューヨークのブルックリンで夏の大停電を体験したことのある制作者が、停電を体験した子どもの視点から制作した絵本。電気が普通に使えるときは、家族の皆が自分のことで忙しく、誰もゲームの相手をしてくれなかったが、電気が消えてしまうと皆が互いに気を配るようになった。しかも家族だけでなく、近所中がお互いに声を掛け合った。停電の楽しさを味わった少女は電気が戻った後も家の電気を消して、家族揃ってゲームを楽しんだ。電気が家族間の距離を開けている事実に、はっとさせられる。

While moms and dads are in a pie-eating contest at the fair, their babies are chasing butterflies, and heading for the trees. Only a small boy sees them leaving and follows them to experience the adventure.  It’s a lovely story of the five different babies described by black silhouettes against stunning skies of many colors that change and glow as afternoon turns into evening.

美しい色彩のバックグランドにまるで切りえのごとくにシルエットで描かれたイラストは、大変に迫力がある。しかも詳細が実に丁寧に暖かく表現されて、シルエットだけで赤ちゃんの多様性まで判断できる。話は、フェアで親達がパイ食べ競争に夢中になっている間に、赤ちゃんたちが蝶を追いかけて這い出してしまった。それに気ずいた少年が、追いかけて５人の赤ちゃんを無事に連れ戻すまでのはらはらどきどきストリーなのだが、実に微笑ましく親子の愛情が一杯溢れ出ている素敵な絵本。

Father and his son’s relation is sometime very gentle, and sometime it’s very rough. A parent’s unpredictable moods can be frightening to a small kids, and this book attempts to address that fear. Johnny’s father is the same with other fathers, and Johnny knows that his Daddy’s thundering times always come to end and he will make applesauce for Johnny again.

息子の父親への様々な思いを描いた絵本。毎日の何気ない父との戯れに、色々なイマジネーションが息子の頭の中に沸き起こる。アップルソースのように甘く優しい父親だったり、ガミガミとうるさい雷のような父親だったり、、、子どもの視点から描かれた父親に、児童心理が良く重なっている。おへそを曲げながらもアップルソースを全部平らげた息子に、父親の表情も和らぎ、親子の愛情をしっかりと漂わせている。小さな息子にとっては、最も身近にいる大きな父親は、初めて体験する異次元の人物に違いない。

Julia loves to spend time with her grandmother at her house where she decorates the table with napkins hand-embroidered ‘forget me not’ flowers and prepares her special cuisine for Julia. But grandma’s whole family is concerned as they start to notice that grandma is becoming more and more forgetful, and the time has come for her to move out her house and into an assisted living community to get the best care. It’s hard for Julia to accept the reality of her grandma’s all changings, but Julia tries her best.

祖母の老いを取り上げた絵本。孫娘のジュリアは祖母の家を訪ねて祖母と過ごす時間を毎回楽しみにしていた。忘れな草の刺繍を縫ったナプキンで食卓を飾り、得意の料理をご馳走してくれた祖母であったが、次第に物忘れが進んでいった。愛する祖母の異変に不安と戸惑いを見せながらも、両親と共にジュリアは祖母の現実を受け入れようと努力する。家族ならばこその溢れ出る思いやりが、散りばめられ、ほのぼのとした絵本に仕上がっている。

Follow along as a classroom of  young kids explore at art and the power of creativity in its most varied forms – painting, music, writing, cooking, performing…there’s no end of where their imagination can take them. On the stage, they show their creations to the audience/their parents.

幼い子ども達のスクールでの話であるが、様々なアートに子どもなりに挑戦してゆく。英語は文ではなく、単語のみ。お茶目で悪戯好きな子ども達のハラハラどきどきの理由が、最後に表現されている。大きくなったら何になりたいか、各自が自作した衣装で表現しているのだ。ステージの上に立った子ども達も、それを見守る親達にも多様性があふれ出いる。タイトルの Think Big とは、大きくなったら、そうなって欲しいとの願いが込められているようだ。
