Based on the novel of love story which was first published in Austria in 1937. Just before the WW one,  Ali, who is a descendant of the noble Muslim family and educated in Russian high school, met Nino from neighboring Georgia in Baku, Azerbaijan. Nino belongs to more European world with Christian tradition, but the two are deeply in love and elope to the countryside. Their happy family life with their daughter hardly keep away from the war.

1937年にオーストリアで初出版された小説を基にした映画。時は第一次世界大戦直前、イスラム貴族の子孫であるアリはロシアの学校教育を受けた青年であった。彼はアゼルバイジャンのバクで隣国のジョージアから来たリノに出合った。リノはキリスト教徒でヨーロッパ世界で育っていたが、二人は恋に陥り、山岳地の村に駆け落ちした。結婚し子供も出来たが、戦争の足音が二人の幸福な生活にも追いついてきた。激動の時代の中でも、東西文化があでやかに混合し融合している見ごたえがある映画。
