Good-bye, Curtis

Curtis is a mailman who has been delivering for 42 years, and today is his last day. All mailboxes along his route are filled with surprises.  And then when Curtis knocks the door of his last house to delivery,  more and beautiful surprise has been waiting for him.

郵便配達人のカーティスが、４２年間働いた最後の日。町中の人達が、彼への感謝と別れの言葉やプレゼントを郵便受けに入れたり、通りや家で挨拶を交わしたりする様子が描かれ語られている。そして、その日の最後の家の郵便を届けると、その家の中から、、、、、サプライズがカーティスをまっていた。町の時間の流れと共に、誠実に仕事に打ち込んできたカーチィスの人柄がにじみ出ていて、読者を暖かな思いで満たしてくれる。

Traditionに集録されている Mama, do you love me? (アラスカの母と娘）、Papa, do you love me? (マサイ族の父と息子）と、同じ作者とイラストレーターのコンビで、ハワイの祖母と孫娘の話。ハワイ語やハワイの文化を散りばめながら、祖母の孫娘への愛情が、ほとばしるように描かれている。巻末には、ハワイ語や文化の解説もあり、ハワイの香りいっぱいの素敵な絵本である。

The Doorbell Rang

Mam bakes cookies for her two children, and her children love Mam’s cookies as telling they are so good just like their grandmother made one. While they enjoy the cookies, their doorbell ring. Neighbor kids come and Mam invite them into the house to share her cookies. And then, another doorbells ring. Each ring of the doorbell brings more kids to share the delicious cookies………….and Again, the doorbell ring!

My Father’s Shop

Mustafa, a young Moroccan boy comes to his father’s shop full with beautiful rugs. His father welcomes all tourists from around the world, and greets them in their language. Mustafa finds a little rug which he loves, and his father gives it to him since it has a big hole. Instead of that, his father encourages Mustafa to learn different languages to entertain foreign tourist. Mustafa runs out of the shop to the market with his favorite rug over his head, he encounters a rooster hearten by his bright colored rug. End up Mustafa attracts many tourists to his father’s shop as speaking the rooster’s sound in 5 different languages.

モロッコで絨毯を売っている父の家を手伝っていた少年が、売り物にならない、穴のあいた小さな絨毯をもらった。その代わりに、世界各国から来る観光客を店に招く為に、色々な国の言葉を覚えるように、父から言われた。少年が絨毯を被ってマーケットへ行くと、絨毯と同じ色合いの雄鶏が後をついてきた。お陰で世界五ヶ国語の雄鶏の鳴き声を、覚えたが、、、、愉快で楽しい話の絵本は、イラストレーターとしても活躍している市川里美女史の作品。

The first bear in Africa

When a family of tourists from far away visits Meto’s village in African savanna, he is fascinated by the teddy bear which the little girl holds. Meto never see such kind of animal in his savanna. And then Meto finds the stuffed bear left behind the girl, as the family drives off from his village. Meto starts to run to catch the car, and chases it through the savanna. Finally Meto can hand the bear to the delighted girl, just about their departure within a small air plane.

アフリカ中央のサバンナに住んでいる少年の家族の所に、ある日観光客がやってきた。その観光客のグループの中に、小さな女の子が動物をかかえていた。それは縫ぐるみのデディー・ベアであったが、少年はサバンナでは見たことない動物であった。観光客のグループが帰った後、少年は女の子が落としていったクマを届けようと、観光客の車の後を追って行く。見知らぬ子供同士、そしてサバンナの動物達の思いやりが暖かい。日本生まれの作者、市川里美女史はアフリカを含め世界各地を旅行し、イラストレイターとしても国際的に活躍している。

A little boy Francisco ties to get mangos from the mango grove all by himself, but some problem happened forces him to return to his home. Each time his returning, his father shares a different proverb to encourage Francisco to continue trying. Finally Francisco gathers some mangoes, and one the way home he shares them with his relatives until nothing left for his own home.  >>> A glossary of Spanish words is provided.

3軒の家の先にある公園の端にあるマンゴの木に、マンゴを取りに行く話しなのだが、「ことわざ」が英語とスペイン語で頻繁に出てくる。父親から頼まれた小さな男の子は、一人でマンゴ採りに挑戦することになるのだが、色々な困難に出会う。その度に「ことわざ」で、皆から勇気ずけられる。「ことわざ」はどの民族にもある先人からの知恵でもあるのだが、その表現方法や使い方に、民族色が出ていて大変ユニークな本に仕上がっている。切り絵のようなイラストも、楽しさを増してくれる。

Yoon and the Jade Bracelet

This is the 3rd story of Yoon who moved from Korea to America with her family, and featured Yoon’s birthday. Yoon wants a jump rope to join the other girls on the school playground. Instead Yoon receives a Korean storybook from her mother, and a jade bracelet that once belonged to her grandmother. Next day at school, a girl offers to teach Yoon how to jump rope, if she can borrow Yoon’s jade bracelet.  Yoon agrees, but when Yoon wants to get her keepsake bracelet, the girl insists it belong to her. >>>My name is Yoon ( in 2003, 2014)、Yoon and the Christomas Mitten (in 2006)

米国ではお馴染みになっているYoonシリーズの３冊目。祖母からの翡翠の腕輪を、お誕生日プレゼントにもらったYoonだが、ほんとに欲しかったのは縄跳びであった。仲間はずれの韓国人のYooonは、縄跳びの仲間に入りたい為に、大事な腕輪を学校の女の子に貸してあげたが、、、、異文化の狭間でもおちゃめで明るいYoonらしい発想が、このシリーズの人気をよんでいる。

Thanksgiving at OBAACHAN’S

Yoon and the Christmas Mitten

Yoon is a Korian girl who moved from Korea to America with her family, and the same heroine of “My name is Yoon”. She learns about Christmas and Santa Claus at school, and is captivated by this seasonal event. But Yoon parents insists they should follow to Korean traditional event, and Christmas celebration is not for them.  And then, Yoon and her parents figure out a way to meld a Christmas tradition and their own New Year’s event.
