Belanca from Argentina cannot speak English, except “No English” and she becomes a new student of the second grade class in an American school. How to communicate with Belanca is a big challenge for all her classmates, especially for a student who sits next to her.  Mrs. Bertram, their teacher, helps her class students understand that difference is not strange nor weird, just different.

英語の解らないベロニカが、小学校２年生のクラスで、自分の隣の席となった。アルゼンチンから米国に来たベロニカは、スペイン語しか解らなかった。言葉の解らない子どもと、どのように友人になったら良いのか、この絵本はその回答の一つを与えてくれる正に異文化理解の教科書でもある。同じようなケースなら、「異質性を受け入れて豊かさを得る」学校現場でのお手本にもなるであろう。

However, she moved to the countryside in North Carolina and there was valley and streams but no libraries. Miss Dorothy and her new neighbors decided to start  a bookmobile.

読書と人々が大好きなミス・ドロシーは、大きくなったら図書館員になりたかった。マサチューセッツの故郷の街にある図書館みたいに、庭にブロックで作った本棚に本を並べて貸し出した。図書館員になる為に勉強して、大学の図書館の本もほとんど読み、立派に卒業したが、結婚して田舎へ引っ越すことになった。そしてそこには、図書館はなかった。人種を超えて本を愛する人達の思いが、いっぱい詰まった絵本。

Farah is a new student from another country, and she only listens and nods to communicate with other schoolmates.  On the 2nd day of her school, Farah joins a field trip to an apple orchard with her classmates and she discovers around her there are a lot of similar things with her homeland. Eventually Farah overcomes her loneliness.
