What a Wonderful World

Simple way to express to children the beauty and harmony in the world around them through the lyrics of this song by George D. Weiss and Bob Thiele, made famous by singer Louis Armstrong. As opening page by page, be able to hear beautifully the characteristic low voice of Louis Armstrong.

ルイ・アームストロングのあの有名な歌　”What a wonderful world”　が、詩となって描かれた絵本。ページを開く度に、アームストロングの渋い声が聞こえてきそうだ。イラストは思いっきり明るい色彩で、子ども達が歌の歌詞に合わせて指人形劇をしている様子が描かれている。この絵本を通して、改めてこの歌の素晴らしさを再認識させられる。

Proclaimed by the United Nations in 1948, these rights apply to every child and adult world widely. Amnesty International has taken 30 articles that comprise the Declaration and simplified to make easy understanding even for elementary school children. Each right is illustrated by an international array of well-known artistes.

世界人権宣言の30の人権を要約し、イラストを使って子どもにも解り易く解説した絵本。28名の夫々に個性溢れるイラストレーターのイラストは、圧巻である。アムネスティー・インターナショナルUKの制作によるこの絵本は、世界人権宣言60周年を記念して企画されたもの。難しくなりがちな人権問題もイラストのお陰で、大人達にもお薦めの絵本。巻末では、総てのイラストレーターを写真入りで紹介している。

Naming Liberty

Two stories present at once, a story of a girl’s journey to America on the left side pages and a story of the Statue of Liberty on the right side pages. A young girl Gitl in Russia is leaving her homeland for far away America, wondering what name she will choose for her in the new country. Meanwhile a French artist Frederic Auguste Bartholdi is dreaming of a monument he wants to build to honor freedom. Two different stories in the same epoch, and connected with the keyword “Liberty”.

見開きのそれぞれの左右のページで別の話が進行してゆく。左ページは東欧のある家族が米国移民を決心し現実に米国へ渡るまでの話が、右ページにはフランス人彫刻家のバルトルデイが米国への贈り物を思いつき自由の女神像を創作し、自由の女神が米国に渡るまでの話。Libertyの言葉へのそれぞれの人の思いが、様々な形で現実化されてゆくドキュメンタリータッチの読む歴史絵本。

Small Beauties ～The Journey of Darcy Heart O’Hara

One day a blight strikes the land, the  potatoes turn rotten, and Darcy and her family must leave Ireland forever. Fortunately Darcy finds a way to bring the small beauties of her homeland across the sea to America.

大自然の恵みである小さな美しいものを集めていた少女は、スカートのすそにそれらをしまい込んでいた。アイルランドで貧困と戦いながらも、大自然の美しさに驚嘆する心を忘れなかった少女は、住む家を無くし家族とアメリカに船で移民した時も、故郷の小さな美を家族のために持ってきていた。英語は植物の専門用語もあり、高学年向きの読む絵本。

Maggie’s Chopsticks

Chinese descent girl Maggie straggles to use her new pair of chopsticks. Each family member willingly advice Maggie on how to use the chopsticks, and Maggie listens to all of them in turn. But everyone teaches Maggie differently, Maggie gets confused and frustrated to use her chopsticks. Finally her father suggests Maggie to be herself. Because of his encouragement, Maggie finds just what works for her.

お箸を上手に使えないマギーは、中国系の家族達から、ぞれぞれに言われる。祖母や、母や、姉や、兄や、、、みんなのお箸の持ち方はバラバラであり、マギーは余計に混乱した。そんな時、助け舟を出してくれたのは父親。「自分流でいいんだよ」と言われて、マギーは一安心。同じ伝統文化でも、その伝え方にも色々あることを気ずかせてくれる。

My Teacher for President

二つの文化の比較ではあるが、民族文化ではなく職業文化の比較である。しかも発想が実に楽しく、その発想に子ども心の自由さ、暖かさ、観察力、寛容さが弾けるように光っている。自分達の担任の先生と米国大統領の仕事を比較する発想が、ユニークそのものでもあり、教師の仕事に改めて敬意を表したくなる。童話作家以前に教師をしていた作者の創作力には、脱帽である。

副題は3 Love Storiesとなっているが、冒頭で孫達に奉げると記されている通り、3人の赤ちゃんとの楽しいスキンシップの話。太文字の英語で書かれた詩のような文は楽しい虹色の色彩で、それに合った明るい色のイラストが、赤ちゃんの気持ちを表している。読みながらほのぼのとしたスキンシップの世界に、思わず誘い込まれてしまう素敵な絵本。

Desmond and the very mean word
