After WWII Hong Kong is still a British colony, and East and West culture co-existed as well as multicultural background people. A married American war correspondent whose wife stays at Singapore and a widowed Belgian-Chinese doctor encounter in Hong Kong. They fall in love, but shortly they are destined to separate to different directions. The American correspondent is sent to cover the Korean War and the doctor needs to return to China changed by communist revolution. Since the American journalist die at the Korean War, their love story is in the blink of an eye but rests in her hart forever with the famous lovely screen music the same titled on.

ミュージカル「王様と私」のリメイク版ではあるが、Jodie Foster演じるイギリス人英語教師AnneとYun-Fat Chow演じるシャムの王様が、正に西洋と東洋の出会いを素晴らしく物語っている。見事なタイの文化が随所にそして細部にも出てきて、映画の質をどっしと 高めている。ミュージカルのようなリズムや動きがなくても、見ごたえのある作品に仕上がったのは、異文化を融合させようとする名優達の演技力が大いに貢献 しているからだろう。

Based on a true story of 1944 Christmas Eve. German mother and her second son escape to their hut in the forest. She lost her first son by war, and ensures to protect her second son as running away from the war zone in their town. Shortly after their settling in the hut, three American soldiers who lost their way and three German soldiers accidentally appear in front of the mother and son. She provides a shelter for all soldiers after taking away their all weapons and hiding them. Fear, misunderstanding, prejudgment, and all negativity in each ones’ mind are slowly retreated. Their weapon free dinner of Christmas Eve is truly celebrated with their harmonized peaceful spirit.

イギリスのテレビ・シリーズで、喜劇俳優として有名になったRowan Atkinsonの映画。イギリス人のビーム氏が、フランスのカンヌへの旅行がクジで当たり、仏語が解らないまま一人南フランスを目指すが途中誘拐犯に間違えられる。最後には、カンヌの国際映画祭に紛れ込んでしまいながらもハッピーエンドで終わるが、ビーム氏は何よりも地中海の海に憧れていた。言葉少ない演技である分、顔の表情やボディーラングエッジを豊かに使って、様々な人達とコミュニケーションしていく滑稽さが楽しい。仏語が解らなくても、ビーム氏と一緒にフランス国内旅行をした気分にしてくれる。
