The Keeping Quilt

By Patricia Polacco (Simon & Shuster Books for Young Readers – 1998) Patricia Polacco tells her own family story and the quilt which remains a symbol of family love and faith. ロシアからアメリカへ移民してきたユダヤ人の曾祖母アンは、故郷から持ってきたドレスとショールを大事にしていた。時代と共に、その布は長方形のキルトとなって、家族の歴史を代々繋いできた。作者パトリシアの家族を語った絵本であるが、白黒イラストの中にキルト布だけが鮮やかな色彩で描かれている。１９８８年に出版された初版はパトリシアの代で終わっていたが、その後パトリシアの２人の子ども達が成長したので、子ども達がキルト布を引き継ぐ所まで内容が延長された。パトリシアらしい暖かい表情が溢れるイラスト、そして時代と共に移り変わる様子と変わらず伝わる家族愛が素晴らしい。
