Set in 1832, Ox-Cart Man is a lyrical Journey through the changing season in the life of one New England farmer and his family.  The ox-cart man packs his goods – the wool from  his sheep, the mittens his daughter knitted, the birch brooms his son carved, and even a bag of goose feather from the barnyard goose – and he travels over hills and through valleys, past farms and villages to Portsmouth Market, where he sells his goods.  Then carrying provisions for the family, he returns home, where the cycle begins again.

1832年を背景に、「牛車の人」のこの絵本はニューイングランドに住む農夫と家族の季節と共に変化する生活を描いた物語である。牛車を引く男性は、いろいろな生産したものを詰め込んだ、例えば羊からとったウールや娘が編んだミトンや息子が作った箒や飼っているガチョウの羽も袋に詰めた。そして、彼は丘を越え、いくつもの谷を通り抜け、農場や村を通り過ぎて、牛車に積み込んだ品々をポートマスの市場で売るのだ。そして家族に提供する品々を積んで家に戻り、また生活の循環を再開するのだ。＞＞＞初版の出版から４０年たった記念に再出版された絵本。
