Mikeyの父親は、第一次世界大戦の間、戦闘兵士として海外に行ってしまった。Mikeyは父親を援護する為に何か大きなことをしたかった。彼の学校の先生が、セントラルパークで行われる兵士達の為に編み物を編むイベントへの参加をクラスの生徒達に提案した時、Mikeyと彼の友達は全く興味を示さなかった。そもそも編み物なんか、女の子のすることであった。ところがクラスの女生徒達がこのイベントに参加することに熱心になると、男子生徒達も挑戦しざるをえなくなった。 1918年に実際にニューヨークのセントラル‐パークで行われた編み物大会を基にした物語で、ちょっとした新しい挑戦が末永く継続する貢献になることを読者達に伝えている。＞＞＞巻末に、アメリカの赤十字によって開催されたこのイベントの情報がある。
