Philipok wants to go to school like as his big brother, but he must stay home with his grandmother.  This is one of children’s books written by  Tolstoy, and is retelling by Ann K. Beneduce.

ロシアの文豪トルストイ（1828～1910）は、１８５０年代には小作人の子ども達のための学校を開設。そして多くの子ども向け物語も書いている。その中の一作品を、Ann K. Beneduceが易しい言葉であたらに書いたのがこの絵本。Philipokとは、兄のように学校に行きたかった幼い少年の名前で、物語は彼が内緒で学校へ行ってしまう話。ロシア生まれで家族と共に米国移住したG.Spirinのイラストは中世の絵画を思わせるほどで、厳寒の冬のロシアの情景と暖かさが見事に描かれている。
