中国との貿易の為に、広い深い海の彼方へ出航してしまった父親の帰りを、少女は待った。少女の思いが詩で語られ、少女の想像がイラストとして重なる。１９世紀のケープコッド(マサチューセッツ東端)に住んでいた少女の話であるが、生まれて数ヶ月の弟が歩きだし話し出す頃に、父親が帰ってきた。土産話を聞きながら、海のように広く深い家族の愛情が静かにどっしりと少女にも、読者にも伝わってくる。
