Based on the true story of Vivien Thomas, surgical technician who served at Johns Hopkins for 35 years without education past high school. Thomas was born as a grandson of black slave. Grow up Thomas wishes to go to college, but the great depression does not allow him. He works as a janitor in the lab of the University, and  he starts to learn by himself as helping surgical experiment for Dr. Alfred Blalock.

日本語のタイトルは、「ビビアン・トーマス神業の指先」。米国黒人のビビアン・トーマスは実存人物で、医学学校にも行かず、白人心臓外科医の助手として働きながらその分野の第一人者になった人。米国で人種差別の激しかった時代、白人医師の人種的差別心と医学技術の向上心が絡まりながらも、ビビアンの業績を認めてゆく医師の人類愛とビビアンのひるむことない医学への情熱が感動を与えてくれる。
