Lizzy is happiest when she is playing the big apple tree in her yard. When Lizzy starts school for the first time, she decides to make an apple doll to be with her as her friend. But it does not work as Lizzy wished. Her mother shows Lizzy how to make her apple into a real doll. リズィーは庭のリンゴの木で遊ぶのが大好きであった。学校に始めてゆく時、リンゴで作った人形を友達のように側に置くことにした。しかし、リズィーの期待通りにはゆかなかった。母親が、リンゴを使って本物の人形の作り方を教えてくれた。やがて、人種的な多様性のあるクラスメイト達皆が、それぞれに自分のリンゴ人形を作り楽しみ、又リズィーのリンゴの木でも一緒に遊ぶようになった。巻末にはリンゴ人形の作り方の解説がある。
