白人の作者が、近所の幼馴染の二人の黒人少年と共に慕っていた彼らのお祖母さんの思い出を絵本にした。宗教も異なる黒人家族の一員になりきって、白人少女が黒人の老女を心から愛する気持ちが暖かく伝わってくる。近所に住んでいたロシア人の老人との思い出も忘れがたい。又作者自身によるイラストは、鋭い観察眼でも暖かく描かれている。
