The little girl lives with her grandma, but their village is burned down by fire. She gets on the ship to England by herself, and an English couple raise her. The Jewish young lady joins the choir and stays in Paris where she meets an a mysterious stranger…..her lifelong story to meet her father in America.

1927年ロシアにあるユダヤ人の村に住む娘に、父親はいつも歌を歌っていた。生活苦から、父はアメリカに仕事を求めて行くことになり、娘を祖母に預けて村を発った。村は焼け、少女は一人混乱にまみれてイギリス行きの船に乗り、言葉がわからぬままイギリス人の夫婦に預けられる。そして大きくなると、コーラスガールの仕事を得てパリに住む。そこでジプシーの青年と恋仲になるが、フランスでもユダヤ人狩りが激しくなってゆく。父を探しにアメリカ行きの船に乗るが、魚雷を受けて沈没、、、と、歴史の流れに波乱万丈の人生が揺れ動く。子役のクローディア・ランダー＝デュークが、あどけなくそして意志の強い、歌声の素晴らしい少女を好演している。

都会の人工的なカルチャーと、田舎の自然に満ちたカルチャー。周囲のことばかり気にしている古いカルチャーと、IT技術を活用した新しいカルチャー。同じ家族でありながら、家族間のコミュニケーションが欠如していたが、父親の死がきっかけとなって、それぞれのカルチャーが融合してゆく。融合の鍵は愛となっているが、ここでは思いやりと表現出来る「愛」が、不可能を可能に導いてゆく。ファミリー映画にカテゴリーされている解り易い内容の映画だが、カナダで撮影された自然が、溶け込みたいほど美しい。

一人娘もテーンエイジになり、親子の間にも夫婦の間にも隙間風が感じられた時に、白人女性ソーシャルカウンセラーが、ゴミ集積所に捨てられていた黒人の赤ちゃんに出会った。彼を養子にして、家族の絆もより強くなった頃に、黒人の産みの母親が現われた。息子が死んだとばかり思って悔やんでいた黒人の母親は、息子を自分に取り戻す為にあらゆる努力をした。裁判闘争となるが、産みの親と育ての親の問題に肌の色が更に重なり、色々と考えさせられるが、最後のシーンは感動で包んでくれる。Jessica Lange と Halle Berry が、見事に母親役を熱演している。

この映画の監督兼脚本家は、日本国政府のプログラムで高知県に派遣され中学で一年間英語を教えた経験者で、この映画は彼の初の長編作品でもある。印象深い日本の美、高知の土地柄、人種を超えた愛、芸術の普遍性、親子の絆と、少々欲張りに色々なテーマを盛り込んではいるが、それだけに切り口を変えたら様々な視点からの異文化理解教材ともなりえる。太平洋戦争で父を亡くしたサンフランシスコに住む黒人男性が、家を飛び出し日本に行ってしまった一人息子も事故でなくした。息子が描いて日本に残した絵を探しにやって来た父親は、日本に対する閉ざした心を段々に開いてゆく。詩のように美しく流れるような、映画でもある。

インドの貧困地域で、救済活動にあたっているデンマーク人男性ヤコブは、資金難に直面する。デンマークの資産家から援助資金を募る為に、久しぶりで祖国に戻ったヤコブは、資産家の娘の結婚式に招かれた。そこで、意外な事実が明るみにされた。インドの子ども達が待つインドに一刻も早く帰りたいヤコブは、自分を必要といている人達が祖国にいる事実に目覚めさせられる。デンマークで人気の男優Mads Mikkelsenが、渋い役柄をこなしている、デンマーク映画。デンマークの光景とインドの光景が見事に対比して、世界の２極地を表現している。

Influenced by the terrorist attacks in 2005 London. Elisabeth suddenly loose her communication with her daughter, who is only her child, after the news of bombings in London city. Her husband died as war victim, so Elisabeth searches her daughter alone in London.  Without any specific information, Elisabeth meets Ousmane, Muslim African, who comes from France to search for his son as also lost communication after the tragedy. Elisabeth’s fear and prejudice escalate when she discovers her daughter converted to Islam without her mother known, and she was with Ousmane’s son in the Islamic community of London. But eventually Elisabeth shares with Ousmane the same hope of their children alive.

夫が英国海軍軍人であった未亡人が、2005年にロンドンで起こった同時多発爆破の後に、一人娘と連絡が取れなくなった。心配になった母親は、ロンドンで娘を探している間に、息子を探しにフランスから来たイスラム教徒のアフリカ人男性に出会う。自分の娘がイスラム教に改宗し、アフリカ人の彼の息子と一緒にアラビア語を学んでいた事実を知り母親に衝撃が走る。ロンドンとは言え異文化に囲まれた不安の中で、子供を心配する同じ親としての気持ちが重なり合うと同時に、自分達の知らなかった子ども達との世代の断絶を知る寂しさが溢れ出す。2人の主役俳優の演技が素晴らしく、この映画の翌年に74歳で死去したマリ出身のSotiqui Kouyateはベルリン国際映画際で最優秀演技賞を受賞。

オーストラリアからインドのカルカッタへ、養子を引き取りに来たオーストラリア人夫婦が手続き上の過程で、何日も待たされる。その間に若き夫婦の揺れ動く心が、ダイナミックなインドのカルチャーに次第に深く浸ってゆく。異文化の垣根を越えて、人間として大切なものは何かを、若き夫婦のみならず鑑賞者にも語りかけてくる。子供への普遍の親の愛が、夫婦の愛にも確かな架け橋をかけてくれる。インド映画でなくとも、見事にインドの精神文化を描いている作品。
